Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

redux-branchable

simple branching functionality for redux

Inspired by redux-undo, this is a simple reducer enhancer for redux which enables branching time travel. All actions are saved, time travel is possible and encouraged, and any actions dispatched from a historic state result in a new branch being created.

Usage example:

// setup
import todoApp from './reducers'
import {createBranchableReducer, goToSpecificAction} from 'redux-branchable'
const store = createStore(createBranchableReducer(todoApp))

// stuff happens in the app
dispatch(addTodo("i'm on the main/first branch"));
dispatch(addTodo("still on the first branch"));
dispatch(goToSpecificAction(0, 0)); // go back to the beginning
dispatch(addTodo("a new branch is created"));
dispatch(addTodo("more stuff on the second branch"));
dispatch(goToSpecificAction(0, 2)); // go back to the second action on the first branch
dispatch(addTodo("adding stuff to the first branch again"));
dispatch(goToSpecificAction(1, 0)); // go back to the beginning of the second branch
dispatch(addTodo("creating a new branch off of the second one"));

After the above exercise, the state should look something like this:

{
  "currentState": { // this is where the current state goes
    "todos": [
      { "text": "a new branch is created", "completed": false },
      { "text": "creating a new branch off of the second one", "completed": false }
    ]
  },
  "currentBranch": 2, // the currently active branch
  "currentAction": 0, // the current depth within the active branch
  "branches": [
    { // first branch
      "parent": null,
      "actions": [
        { "type": "@@redux-branchable/INIT" }, // TODO: make this internal action unneccessary
        { "type": "ADD_TODO", "text": "i'm on the main/first branch" },
        { "type": "ADD_TODO", "text": "still on the first branch" },
        { "type": "ADD_TODO", "text": "adding stuff to the first branch again" }
      ]
    },
    { // second branch
      "parent": { // the branch and deptch from which this branch was created
        "branch": 0,
        "action": 0
      },
      "actions": [
        { "type": "ADD_TODO", "text": "a new branch is created" },
        { "type": "ADD_TODO", "text": "more stuff on the second branch" }
      ]
    },
    { // third branch
      "parent": {
        "branch": 1,
        "action": 0
      },
      "actions": [
        { "type": "ADD_TODO", "text": "creating a new branch off of the second one" }
      ]
    }
  ]
}

The historic state tree can be visualized within the app, and the visualization can be used to navigate quickly between the branches:

A utility method for transforming the branch state to a tree structure is also supplied:

import { getBranchStateAsTree } from 'redux-branchable'
getBranchStateAsTree(state.branches);
// returns:
{
  "action": { "type": "@@redux-branchable/INIT" },
  "branch": 0,
  "depth": 0,
  "children": [
    {
      "action": { "type": "ADD_TODO", "text": "i'm on the main/first branch" },
      "branch": 0,
      "depth": 1,
      "children": [
        {
          "action": { "type": "ADD_TODO", "text": "still on the first branch" },
          "branch": 0,
          "depth": 2,
          "children": [
            {
              "action": { "type": "ADD_TODO", "text": "adding stuff to the first branch again" },
              "branch": 0,
              "depth": 3,
              "children": []
            }
          ]
        }
      ]
    },
    {
      "action": { "type": "ADD_TODO", "text": "a new branch is created" },
      "branch": 1,
      "depth": 0,
      "children": [
        {
          "action": { "type": "ADD_TODO", "text": "more stuff on the second branch" },
          "branch": 1,
          "depth": 1,
          "children": []
        },
        {
          "action": { "type": "ADD_TODO", "text": "creating a new branch off of the second one" },
          "branch": 2,
          "depth": 0,
          "children": []
        }
      ]
    }
