Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

redux-nylas-middleware

Redux Nylas middleware makes it super easy to make Nylas API calls in redux action creators. No need to pass around an access token to make requests.

Setup

Install

npm install redux-nylas-middleware --save

Add the middleware when you create your store:

import { createStore, applyMiddleware } from 'redux'
import createNylas from 'redux-nylas-middleware'

const nylas = createNylas()

const store = createStore(
  rootReducer,
  applyMiddleware(
    nylas,
    logger
  )
)

Setting the Auth Token

The middleware provides two actions to help manage your token (setToken and clearToken). Import the actions into whatever container you will be using them in and put them in mapDispatchToProps.

import { actions as nylasActions } from 'redux-nylas-middleware'

...

const mapDispatchToProps = (dispatch) => {
  return {
    ...nylasActions,
  }
}

After doing the oauth dance with Nylas, call the setToken action you just put in your container and pass the token:

componentDidMount() {
  this.props.setToken('a1b2c3d4e5f6g7h8i9')
}

Making Calls in Actions

Making calls in actions are now super easy. Import NYLAS_API and set that as the key of the returned object:

import { NYLAS_API } from 'redux-nylas-middleware'

getThreads: () => ({
  [NYLAS_API]: {
    endpoint: 'threads?in=inbox',
    types: [THREADS_REQUEST, THREADS_SUCCESS, THREADS_FAILURE],
  },
})

This will then dispatch the THREADS_REQUEST action whenever it is making a request and then either a THREADS_SUCCESS if it is successful or THREADS_FAILURE if it is not.

Api Object

  • endpoint: String. Endpoint after https://api.nylas.com/. Eg: threads
  • endpoints: Array of Strings. If you want to make multiple requests in one action, pass in an array of endpoints here. It is useful when fetching, for example, multiple messages: ['messages/1', 'messages/2', 'messages/3', 'messages/4']
  • types: Array of action types. Required. In order: [REQUEST_ACTION_TYPE, SUCCESS_ACTION_TYPE, FAILURE_ACTION_TYPE]
  • method: String. Fetch method: GET, PUT, POST, DELETE, defaults to GET.
  • body: Object. Any data you are passing to Nylas. It is stringified automatically.
