Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

redux-promised-thunk

Thunk middleware which is support functions and Promises for Redux. Originally based on [redux-thunk](middleware.

npm install --save redux-promised-thunk

What's a thunk?!

A thunk is a function that wraps an expression to delay its evaluation.

// calculation of 1 + 2 is immediate
// x === 3
let x = 1 + 2;

// calculation of 1 + 2 is delayed
// foo can be called later to perform the calculation
// foo is a thunk!
let foo = () => 1 + 2;

Usage

redux-promised-thunk middleware allows you to write action creators that return a thunk instead of an action. The thunk can be used to delay the dispatch of an action, or to dispatch only if a certain condition is met. The thunk receives the store methods dispatch and getState() as parameters.

An action creator that returns a thunk to perform asynchronous dispatch:

const INCREMENT_COUNTER = 'INCREMENT_COUNTER';

function increment() {
  return {
    type: INCREMENT_COUNTER
  };
}

function incrementAsync() {
  return dispatch => {
    setTimeout(() => {
      // Yay! Can invoke sync or async actions with `dispatch`
      dispatch(increment());
    }, 1000);
  };
}

An action creator that returns a thunk to perform conditional dispatch:

function incrementIfOdd() {
  return (dispatch, getState) => {
    const { counter } = getState();

    if (counter % 2 === 0) {
      return;
    }

    dispatch(increment());
  };
}

But you can also return async functions:

function incrementIfOdd() {
  return async (dispatch, getState) => {
    const { counter } = getState();

    const result = await shouldIncrement(counter);
    if (!result)
      return;
    }

    dispatch(increment());
  };
}

To enable redux-promised-thunk use applyMiddleware():

import { createStore, applyMiddleware, combineReducers } from 'redux';
import PromisedThunk from 'redux-promised-thunk';
import * as reducers from './reducers/index';

const reducer = combineReducers(reducers);

// create a store that has redux-thunk middleware enabled
const actionPromises = [];
const createStoreWithMiddleware = applyMiddleware(
  PromisedThunk((promisedAction, action, store) => {
    actionPromises.push(promisedAction);
  }
)(createStore);

const store = createStoreWithMiddleware(reducer);
