Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Remarc

A js library to dynamically calculate and set rem as the viewport width changing.

Installation

npm install remarc --save-dev

Concepts

  • rem: The font-size value of the root element, used as a unit in web document.
  • designWidth: The width of the design drawing that designer gave you.
  • viewportRatio: The ratio of viewportHeight to viewportWidth.

Usage

Import the package and it will calculate and set rem for you automatically, then start watching the change of the size of window. The default designWidth is 750px.

// In ES6 way:
import Remarc from 'remarc';

// Or in CommonJS way:
const Remarc = require('remarc');

// Bootstrap
Remarc.init();

If the width of your design drawing is not 750px but, for example, 720px, you can:

import Remarc from 'remarc';

Remarc.init({
  designWidth: 720
});

API Reference

Remarc.init(options?: Object)

Call Remarc.update method immediately for once, and call it when 'load' or 'resize' event of window happened.

options

  • designWidth: number - The width of your design drawing.

  • maxWidth: number - When the viewportWidth is greater than maxWidth, the rem will be calculated using maxWidth thus it will stay unchanged.

// The default designWidth is 750px
Remarc.init();
// Or you can init with a different designWidth
Remarc.init({
  designWidth: 720,
  maxWidth: 1000
});

Remarc.update()

Calculate and update the values immediately when called.

Remarc.get(name: string): number

Get the current value of the given name.

Remarc.get('rem')
Remarc.get('designWidth')
Remarc.get('viewportWidth')
Remarc.get('viewportHeight')
Remarc.get('viewportRatio')

Remarc.onChange(handler: Function): Function

Add an event handler which will be called when any of the values are changed.

var fn = Remarc.onResize(() => {
  let rem = Remarc.get('rem');
  console.log('The current rem value is ' + rem);
});
// Remove the event handler when it's necessary
fn();
