Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Responsive Image - Component template for Magnolia CMS

In a responsive web design, images typically change size with the width of the browser. This component ensures that the image rendition that is loaded is both large enough to supply the highest quality, and the smallest that will suffice. It does this with the help of the lazysizes javascript library.

This component is based on the Magnolia Templating Kit (mtk) image component. It would be easy to adapt the TextImage component to have a responsive image in the same way.

Features

  • Chooses the best image rendition for the currently displayed image size on the page.
  • Lazily loads images - that is, only loads images that are scrolled onto the page.
  • Load new image renditions as necessary when the page is resized.
  • Graceful fallback if javascript is disabled.

Usage

For a ready-to-use light module, grab the package from npm. For the source files, refer to the github repo.

The real 'action' is in /templates/macros/responsiveImageLazySizes.ftl.

  • Include the webresources/libs/lazysizes.min.js on your pages.
  • Include the webresources/css/responsive-image.css on your pages.
  • Customize the macro in /templates/macros/responsiveImageLazySizes.ftl (responsiveImageConfigured) as desired.
  • Include those renditions in your site theme that are listed in the above mentioned macro (So that magnolia knows how to generate the proper renditions)
  • Make the component available to your pages.
  • Add the component to your page.

(To make this component available on the mtk basic page, you could use the decoration included in _dev/decorations.)

Tip - the theme definition supplied in /themes/demo-responsive-image-magnolia.yaml shows the proper rendition configuration. You could integrate these values into your theme - or directly reference this theme in your site. (Or maybe use a decoration to add them to your sites' theme.)

Building the Github source files

  • npm install to retrieve the dependencies.
  • npm run build to build the webresources. The files in webresources must be included on the page.

Demo

To see an example page demonstrating this component:

  • Open the Assets app in Magnolia AdminCentral and import _dev/demos/dam.demo-responsive-image-magnolia.xml.
  • Open the Pages app in Magnolia AdminCentral and import _dev/demos/website.demo-responsive-image.xml.

Information on Magnolia CMS

This directory is a Magnolia 'light module'.

Contribute to the Magnolia component ecosystem

It's easy to create components for Magnolia and share them on github and npm. I invite you to do so and join the community. Let's stop wasting time by developing the same thing again and again, rather let's help each other out by sharing our work and create a rich library of components.

Just add magnolia-light-module as a keyword to npm's package.json to make them easy to find and use on npm.
