Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

rollup-plugin-im-client-component

Let your components say 'use client' themselves

npm

Features

  • ✨ Auto-inject 'use client' based on React client API detection
  • 🎯 Specifier-level matching (only hooks and client APIs, not jsx-runtime)
  • 📦 Source map preservation
  • 🔧 Compatible with Vite, Rollup, and Rolldown

Getting Started

Requires

  • Node.js 20+

Installation

pnpm add -D rollup-plugin-im-client-component

Quick Start

Vite Library Mode

vite.config.ts

import { defineConfig } from 'vite';
import react from '@vitejs/plugin-react';
import clientDirective from 'rollup-plugin-im-client-component';

export default defineConfig({
  build: {
    lib: {
      entry: './src/index.ts',
      formats: ['es'],
    },
    rollupOptions: {
      output: {
        preserveModules: true,
      },
    },
  },
  plugins: [react(), clientDirective()],
});

Rollup

rollup.config.js

import clientDirective from 'rollup-plugin-im-client-component';

export default {
  input: 'src/index.ts',
  output: {
    dir: 'dist',
    format: 'es',
    preserveModules: true,
  },
  plugins: [clientDirective()],
};

How It Works

  1. Hooks into renderChunk (output phase, after bundling)
  2. Parses import statements in each output chunk
  3. Detects React client-side API imports (useState, useEffect, etc.)
  4. Prepends 'use client' directive to matched files

Note: Use with preserveModules: true so each component gets its own chunk. Otherwise the directive may be applied to a single bundled file.

Options

| Option | Type | Default | Description | | ------ | ---- | ------- | ----------- | | clientPatterns | ClientPattern[] | Built-in React patterns | Completely replace default detection patterns | | extraPatterns | ClientPattern[] | [] | Additional patterns merged with defaults | | exclude | string[] | ['**/*.css.js'] | Glob patterns to skip injection | | include | string[] | [] | Glob patterns to always inject | | directive | string | 'use client' | Directive string to inject |

Examples

Add third-party library patterns

clientDirective({
  extraPatterns: [
    { source: /^@radix-ui\/react-/ },
    { source: /^motion\// },
  ],
});

Force include specific files

clientDirective({
  include: ['**/components/**/*.js'],
});

Default Detection

react

Hooks: useState, useEffect, useRef, useCallback, useMemo, useContext, useReducer, useId, useLayoutEffect, useInsertionEffect, useImperativeHandle, useDebugValue, useSyncExternalStore, useTransition, useDeferredValue, useOptimistic, useActionState

Client APIs: use, createContext, forwardRef, memo, lazy, startTransition

react-dom

createPortal, flushSync

react/jsx-runtime is intentionally excluded since all components import it.
