Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

scookie

scookie helps you securely persist JSON data to HTTP cookies for user login

Installation

npm install https://github.com/martinrue/scookie/tarball/master

Initialisation

Call init to set the name of the cookie, the cookie secret, the unauthorised redirect URL and the cookie age (ms):

scookie.init({
  name: 'myapp',
  secret: 'z98Earn0TSBh50C',
  unauthorisedUrl: '/',
  age: 24 * 60 * 60 * 1000
});

Login

Call login to issue a cookie containing data about the user:

var user = { id: 1, username: 'martin', name: 'Martin Rue' };
scookie.login(user, response);

response should be a connect-based HTTP response object capable of setting a response cookie. For example, the response object provided by both connect and express handlers will work fine.

Logout

Call logout to clear any issues cookies:

scookie.logout(response);

Get User Data

To retrieve data about the current session from the cookie, call getCookie:

var cookie = scookie.getCookie(request);

Check User Login

To determine if a login cookie has been issued, call isLoggedIn:

if (scookie.isLoggedIn(request)) {
  // client has untampered cookie set
}

Connect Middleware

To avoid constantly checking isLoggedIn, you can use the middleware function instead:

app.get('/account', scookie.middleware.mustBeLoggedIn, funtion(req, res) {
  // only called if client has untampered cookie set
});

Express Example App

var http = require('http');
var express = require('express');
var scookie = require('scookie');

var app = express();
var server = http.createServer(app);

app.configure(function() {
  app.use(express.cookieParser());
});

scookie.init({
  name: 'woooo',
  secret: 'secret',
  age: 3600000,
  unauthorisedUrl: '/unauthorised'
});

app.get('/', function(req, res) {
  res.send('Hello');
});

app.get('/login', function(req, res) {
  scookie.login({ username: 'martin' }, res);
  res.redirect('/account');
});

app.get('/account', scookie.middleware.mustBeLoggedIn, function(req, res) {
  var cookie = scookie.getCookie(req);
  res.send('account for: ' + cookie.username);
});

server.listen(1234);
