Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

scrollwatcher

This is a module for the browser that will emit events when the elements you specify scroll into or out of view. You get to define what is "in view."

Usage

See the example.

First, you create the scrollwatcher object.

var scrollWatcher = createScrollWatcher();

If using NPM and Browserify:

var scrollWatcher = require('scrollwatcher');

Then, you tell it what elements to watch.

scrollWatcher.watchElements(
  [
    {
      selector: '.one',
      isInViewFunction: middleThirdOfElIntersectsWithView
    },
    {
      selector: '.two',
      isInViewFunction: middleThirdOfElIntersectsWithView
    },
    {
      selector: '.three'
      // Not specifying an isInViewFunction so scrollWatcher will default to
      // checking to see if the center of the element is in the view.
    }
  ]
);

Each element in the array you pass to watchElements should contain a selector string, which it will use to initially find the element.

Optionally, you can also provide isInViewFunction, a function that takes the y value of the top of the current view, the bottom of the current view, and the DOM element being watched and then returns whether or not the element should be counted as being "in view."

For example, this function defines "in view" as the middle third of the element intersecting with the view.

function middleThirdOfElIntersectsWithView(viewTop, viewBottom, el) {
  var topThreshold = el.offsetTop + el.offsetHeight * 0.33;
  var bottomThreshold = el.offsetTop + el.offsetHeight * 0.67;
  return !(bottomThreshold < viewTop || topThreshold > viewBottom);
}

Then, you add event listeners for elMovedIntoView and/or elMovedOutOfView. The 'detail' property of the event will be the DOM element that either moved into or out of view.

document.addEventListener('elMovedIntoView',
  function onElCenterInView(e) {
    // Do whatever you want in response to the element moving into view.
    e.detail.classList.add('in-spotlight');
  }
);

document.addEventListener('elMovedOutOfView',
  function onElCenterOutOfView(e) {
    e.detail.classList.remove('in-spotlight');
  }
);

Optionally, you may want to directly call respondToScroll when the page loads since scroll events don't happen when a page loads:

scrollWatcher.respondToScroll();
