Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Pull data from a Cyclops Marine Gateway into SignalK

signalk-cyclops-gateway

SignalK server plugin to pull data from a Cyclops Marine Gateway and push it into SignalK

Configuration

  • Setup your Cyclops Marine Gateway to connect to your boat's wifi network.
  • Setup UDP Streaming:
    • In your Cyclops Marine Gateway web UI and enable "UDP Broadcast" -> "NMEA0183" for every sensor.
    • Set "Address" to the subnet of your SignalK server eg. 192.168.1.255
    • Set "Port" to 50000 (or whatever you choose in your own config if needed)
    • Set "Talker" to AG - Autopilot - General
    • Set "Sentence" to XDR - Transducer: TempAir, C (this sentence allows the gateway to send the name of the unit with the value)
    • Set "Checksum" to checked/enabled
  • Enter the IP address of your Cyclops Marine Gateway into the plugin configuration.
  • If you don't want to use UDP streaming, set the UDP port to 0 and set the polling interval as desired.

Some Notes:

  • Polling will give you access to the low level details like id, name, station, units, rssi, time, age of data, and of course the load values, but its not a good realtime method
  • UDP streaming will only give you access to the name and load value, but you get the data into SignalK as quickly as possible and as often as the gateway can send it.
  • The plugin defaults to polling every 10 seconds to pull in sensor details, and uses UDP streaming to get realtime sensor data.

Paths

  • All sensor names will be converted to lowercase, non alphanumeric characters removed, and spaces converted to _
    • eg Port V0 becomes port_v0
  • Sensor data output is stored at rigging.{sensor}.tension and units are in Newtons
    • Newtons to kg: value / 9.80665
    • Newtons to tonnes: value / 9.80665 / 1000
    • Newtons to lbf: value / 4.44822
  • Sensor metadata and configuration is stored at cyclops.{sensor}.*
