skill-autoupdate (skup)
Keep your agent skills current. skup updates the two skill sources that have a
real remote, and leaves everything else alone:
- Global npm CLIs published to the registry (e.g.
gh-axi,gnhf,chrome-devtools-axi) vianpm install -g <pkg>@latest. - Claude Code plugins (e.g.
ponytail) via theclaudeCLI (plugin marketplace updatethenplugin update).
It skips local npm link dev checkouts (a linked package is your own fork;
"updating" it would overwrite your work), and it does not touch Anthropic-bundled
skills like docx/pdf/pptx/xlsx, which ship and update with Claude Code
itself.
It is an AXI tool: stdout is
TOON, errors are structured, exit codes are
0 success/no-op, 1 error, 2 usage.
Install
npm install -g skill-autoupdateUse
skup # what needs updating, then how to act (default view)
skup check # list updatable skills, change nothing
skup update # apply all available updates now
skup update --dry-run
skup schedule # register the recurring Windows task (cadence from config)
skup schedule --interval 14
skup status # cadence + whether the task is registered
skup unschedule
skup config --interval 14Cadence
The committed default is weekly (7 days). Set your own machine's cadence with
--interval <days>; it maps to Windows Task Scheduler weeks, so 14 means every
two weeks.
skup config --interval 14 # this machine: biweekly
skup schedule # apply that cadence to the scheduled taskConfig lives at ~/.config/skill-autoupdate/config.json. Scheduled runs append
to ~/.config/skill-autoupdate/update.log.
Scheduling (Windows Task Scheduler)
skup schedule registers a SkillAutoUpdate task that runs
node cli.mjs update --scheduled headless on the configured cadence, with no
Claude session open. Registering the task may require an elevated (Administrator)
terminal.
What it will not do
- Update npm-linked local dev packages (skipped by design).
- Update bundled document skills (they follow Claude Code's own updates).
- Prompt interactively. Every operation completes with flags alone.
