Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

skilltotal

v0.89.0

Static security scanner for MCP servers, agent skills and npm/PyPI packages. Runs the skilltotal Python engine through uvx, pipx or an installed Python.

skilltotal

Run the SkillTotal scanner with npx. It checks MCP servers, agent skills and npm/PyPI packages for tool poisoning, malicious install scripts, credential exfiltration and hidden Unicode. Every finding cites the file and line it came from. The analysis is static: the scanner never runs the code it reads and never calls an LLM.

npx -y [email protected] -- skilltotal scan https://github.com/owner/repo
npx -y [email protected] -- skilltotal scan npm:some-package --fail-on-high

Name the release with --package: a plain npx skilltotal run inside a repository first runs any skilltotal program in that repository's node_modules/.bin, and a repository you are about to scan can ship one.

To use it as a local MCP server in Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor or any other MCP client:

{ "mcpServers": { "skilltotal": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "[email protected]", "--", "skilltotal", "mcp"] } } }

How it runs

The scanner itself is the skilltotal Python package (Python 3.10+). This npm package (Node.js 18 or later) has no scanner code. It starts the engine with the first of these it finds:

  1. uvx from uv, which runs the PyPI release matching this package's version in an isolated environment.
  2. pipx run, which runs the same release, also isolated.
  3. An installed Python 3.11 or later that already has skilltotal, run as python -P -m skilltotal. This uses whatever version is installed. The -P flag, added in Python 3.11, keeps the current directory off the import path, so a skilltotal/ or json.py in the folder you run it from (such as a repository you are scanning) cannot run in place of the engine.

On Windows, the package looks for uvx, pipx and Python only in the directories on PATH, never in the current directory, so a uvx.exe or python.exe committed to a repository you scan cannot run in place of the real one.

The package does not install anything itself, and it has no install scripts or dependencies. If none of the three is available, it exits with code 127 and prints how to install uv, pipx or the Python package.
