Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Skyranger

Build Status

A Node.JS library for generating the relevant binary file for mass-importing custom soldier names into XCOM 2.

Getting Started

Install Skyranger in your project:

 npm i -S skyranger

and import:

let skyranger = require('skyranger')

Usage

Skyranger exposes a single function, which takes in an array of soldier configurations, and returns a Buffer. These configurations are structured as so:

{
	firstName: string,
	nickName: string
	lastName: string,
	gender: number,
	biography: string
}

Both firstName and gender are required fields. gender must be either 1 (male) or 2 (female). If any of these rules fail for any soldier in the array, an error will be thrown.

Example

To generate two soldiers and save the file to disk:

let fs = require('fs')
let skyranger = require('skyranger')

let soldiers = [{
	firstName: 'John,
	nickName: 'Central Officer'
	lastName: 'Bradford',
	gender: 1,
	biography: 'Central Officer John Bradford is the Executive Officer attached to XCOM during XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2. He reports to the Commanding Officer (the player) and often confers with Dr. Shen and Dr. Vahlen. Bradford is frequently referred to by, and answers to, the callsign "Central".'
}, {
	firstName: 'Mrs',
	lastName: 'Sectoid,
	gender: 2,
}]

let soldiersBuffer = skyranger(soldiers)

fs.writeFile('MyCustomSoldiers.bin', soldiersBuffer, (err) => {
	if (err) return console.log('Error')
	console.log('File saved')
})

Installation

To use the generated binary file, you will need to drag the file into the game's Character Pool directory, and then import the soldiers for use in game. To do this:

  • Place the downloaded file into your XCOM Character Pool directory (usually %userprofile%\Documents\My Games\XCOM2\XComGame\CharacterPool)
  • Navigate to the 'Character Pool' menu in XCOM 2
  • Click 'Import Character'
  • Select 'Custom'
  • Click 'IMPORT ENTIRE POOL'
  • Consider ensuring that "Use Character Pool Only" is selected if you wish only your custom soldiers to be selected in-game

Roadmap

Skyranger is no longer being actively developed, however there are some features that would be great to implement.

  • Better handling of UTF-8 characters in soldier names.
  • Weighting to customisation options to better reflect how XCOM 2 generates soldiers.

Contributing

There is a great amount of scope for improving Skyranger, and as such, any contributions are appreciated.
