Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

slim-anim

slim-anim is a small (< 100 lines of code) javascript animation library for those who don't want the bloat (and don't need all the features) of the bigger animation libraries out there.

I personally only need javascript animations for transitioning height 0 -> auto, and animating the browser scroll position in 95% of my projects..

Known shortcomings

  • No color support
  • Transform start value css needs to be inline
  • No support for multiple transform values
  • Probably a bunch of other stuff I didn't notice yet

Simple demo

JSFiddle

Installation

Module version (only modern browsers):

npm install slim-anim

Legacy version:
For an oldschool, non-module version (with IE11 support) use the legacy.js file, and anim.a() instead of anim()

Parameters

anim( DOMElement , properties (Object) , settings (Object) )

Available settings:

duration: Number
easing: String
callback: Function

Examples

import anim from 'slim-anim'

// simple example
anim(el, {top: '500px'})

// complex example
anim(el,
	{
		top: '500px',
		transform: 'scale(2)'
	},
	{
		duration: 1000,
		easing: 'easeInOutQuart',
		callback: function() {
			anim(box, { top: '250px', left: '500px', borderRadius: '100px' }
		)}
	}
)

// slide-toggle ish example
function toggle(el) {
	if (el.offsetHeight > 0) {
		anim(el, { height: 0 + 'px' })
	} else {
		const oHeight = el.style.height
		el.style.height = ''
		const height = el.offsetHeight
		el.style.height = oHeight
		anim(el, { height: height + 'px' })
	}
}

// animate scroll example
anim(document.documentElement, { scrollTop: '0px' })

Preload FPS

This library needs to query the browser framerate once. This happens automatically at the beginning of the first animation you trigger, but causes 2 Frames of predelay. If you want to avoid that, you can call anim().preloadFPS() beforehand.

Available easings

linear, easeInQuad, easeOutQuad, easeInOutQuad, easeInCubic, easeOutCubic, easeInOutCubic, easeInQuart, easeOutQuart, easeInOutQuart, easeInQuint, easeOutQuint, easeInOutQuint
