Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Sockette component for React and Preact

Readme

sockette-component NPM

A (367 byte gzip) Sockette component for React and Preact

Note: This is a component factory for binding Lukeed's sockette library to react and preact.

This is a very light component that exposes sockette's API via component properties.

Please note that (1) nothing is rendered to the DOM and (2) the WebSocket is closed before unmounting!

This module exposes three module definitions:

  • ES Module: dist/sockette-component.es.js
  • CommonJS: dist/sockette-component.js
  • UMD: dist/sockette-component.min.js

If using the UMD bundle, the library is exposed as socketteComponent globally.

Install

$ npm install --save sockette-component

Usage

Quick example that wraps Sockette within a custom component.

Using with React

import { Component, createElement } from "react";
import createSocket from "sockette-component";

const Socket = createSocket({
  Component,
  createElement
});

class Foobar extends Component {
  state = {
    socket: null
  };

  onOpen = ev => {
    console.log("> Connected!", ev);
  };

  onMessage = ev => {
    console.log("> Received:", ev.data);
  };

  onReconnect = ev => {
    console.log("> Reconnecting...", ev);
  };

  sendMessage = _ => {
    // WebSocket available in state!
    this.stte.ws.send("Hello, world!");
  };

  render() {
    return (
      <div class="demo">
        <button onclick={this.sendMessage}>SEND</button>

        <Sockette
          url="wss://..."
          getSocket={socket => {
            this.setState(socket);
          }}
          maxAttempts={25}
          onopen={this.onOpen}
          onmessage={this.onMessage}
          onreconnect={this.onReconnect}
        />
      </div>
    );
  }
}

Using with Preact

import { h, Component } from "preact";
import Sockette from "sockette-component";

const Socket = createSocket({
  Component,
  createElement: h
});

class Foobar extends Component {
  state = {
    socket: null
  };

  onOpen = ev => {
    console.log("> Connected!", ev);
  };

  onMessage = ev => {
    console.log("> Received:", ev.data);
  };

  onReconnect = ev => {
    console.log("> Reconnecting...", ev);
  };

  sendMessage = _ => {
    // WebSocket available in state!
    this.state.ws.send("Hello, world!");
  };

  render() {
    return (
      <div class="demo">
        <button onclick={this.sendMessage}>SEND</button>

        <Sockette
          url="wss://..."
          getSocket={socket => {
            this.setState(socket);
          }}
          maxAttempts={25}
          onopen={this.onOpen}
          onmessage={this.onMessage}
          onreconnect={this.onReconnect}
        />
      </div>
    );
  }
}

Properties

Please see Sockette's Options — all props are passed directly to sockette.

url

Type: String

The URL you want to connect to — see Sockette's docs.

Context

The active WebSocket is sent on mount of Socket component by calling getSocket prop callback. You can save it by any means via providing a getSocket prop as shown in the example above. This means that you can programmatically interact with Sockette's API, including close(), reconnect(), send(), etc.

When <Sockette/> is unmounted, the WebSocket is closed (ws.close()).
