Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Features

  • Builder — upload screenshots, click to place annotations (circle or arrow), resize, reorder steps
  • Viewer — slide-by-slide walkthrough with smooth transitions, animated annotations, progress bar
  • Auto-zoom — optionally zoom in on the annotation point when a slide appears
  • Click anywhere to advance to the next step
  • Storage-agnostic — plug in your own upload function (Vercel Blob, S3, Cloudinary…)
  • Standalone embed — use on any webpage without React via a single <script> tag
  • Zero runtime dependencies — only React as a peer dep

Installation

npm install stepsnap

Usage

Viewer only

Display a pre-built walkthrough:

import { WalkthroughViewer } from 'stepsnap'
import type { WalkthroughData } from 'stepsnap'

const data: WalkthroughData = {
  title: 'How to create a user',
  steps: [
    {
      id: '1',
      imageUrl: 'https://example.com/step1.png',
      caption: 'Click on the Settings tab',
      annotation: {
        type: 'circle',
        x: 72.5,     // % from left
        y: 34.0,     // % from top
        color: '#6366f1',
        animated: true,
        size: 40,
        zoom: true,
      },
    },
  ],
}

export default function MyPage() {
  return <WalkthroughViewer data={data} accentColor="#6366f1" />
}

Builder + Viewer

Let users create and preview walkthroughs:

import { useState } from 'react'
import { WalkthroughBuilder, WalkthroughViewer } from 'stepsnap'
import type { WalkthroughData, UploadFn } from 'stepsnap'

// Wire up your own storage
const upload: UploadFn = async (file) => {
  const form = new FormData()
  form.append('file', file)
  const res = await fetch('/api/upload', { method: 'POST', body: form })
  const { url } = await res.json()
  return url
}

export default function Editor() {
  const [data, setData] = useState<WalkthroughData>({ title: '', steps: [] })

  return (
    <WalkthroughBuilder
      data={data}
      onChange={setData}
      onUpload={upload}
      accentColor="#6366f1"
    />
  )
}

Standalone embed (no React required)

Build the embed bundle:

npm run build:embed
# outputs dist-embed/stepsnap-embed.js

Then drop it on any webpage:

<div id="my-guide"></div>
<script src="stepsnap-embed.js"></script>
<script>
  StepSnap.mount('#my-guide', {
    accentColor: '#6366f1',
    data: {
      title: 'Getting started',
      steps: [
        {
          id: '1',
          imageUrl: 'https://example.com/step1.png',
          caption: 'Click the Settings tab',
          annotation: {
            type: 'circle',
            x: 72, y: 34,
            color: '#6366f1',
            animated: true,
            size: 40,
            zoom: true
          }
        }
      ]
    }
  })
</script>

To unmount:

StepSnap.unmount('#my-guide')

The embed bundle includes React — no other dependencies needed. Gzip size ~176 KB.

Web Component (framework-agnostic)

Use <stepsnap-viewer> on any webpage or framework:

<stepsnap-viewer
  accent-color="#6366f1"
  data='{"title":"My guide","steps":[{"id":"1","imageUrl":"https://...","caption":"Step 1"}]}'
></stepsnap-viewer>
<script src="stepsnap-viewer-wc.iife.js"></script>

Build the web component bundle:

npm run build:wc
# outputs dist-wc/stepsnap-viewer-wc.iife.js
