Autonomous AI Engineering Platform — Sprint 1
SJ2 is a CLI that gives you an AI engineering agent for your terminal: ask questions about your codebase, get an explanation of any file, propose and apply reviewed edits with automatic rollback, decompose a goal into a structured plan, and run that plan end-to-end — all backed by whichever AI provider you configure (OpenAI, Anthropic, Groq, Gemini, Ollama, OpenRouter, or Azure OpenAI).
sj2 hello
sj2 ask "What does this repo do?"
sj2 scan
sj2 plan "Add rate limiting to the API"
sj2 edit src/server.ts "Add a health check endpoint"Status: Sprint 1
This is the first sprint of SJ2. It ships a real, working CLI with:
- 11 commands (
hello, ask, explain, edit, scan, plan, doctor, run, config, providers, version) - A provider abstraction with genuine HTTP implementations for all seven target providers
- A security-gated tool runtime (no shell injection, no path traversal)
- A planner + orchestrator that decomposes and executes goals
- An edit engine with diff preview, apply, and automatic rollback on validation failure
- Local project memory and a repository scanner
- 100+ tests (unit, integration, and CLI-level)
Not yet in Sprint 1, called out explicitly per the original spec: VS Code integration, multi-agent workflows, cloud sync, and offline model execution are future work, not implemented here.
Quick start
npm install -g @stvdio/sj2
cp .env.example .env # then fill in the provider you want to use
sj2 doctor
sj2 ask "Summarize this repository"See INSTALLATION.md for full setup instructions, COMMANDS.md for every command and flag, and CONFIGURATION.md for provider/config details.
Architecture at a glance
CLI (commander) → Commands → AgentOrchestrator → Planner
│ │
└──► ToolRuntime (the ONLY thing
that touches fs/git/exec)
│
fileTools · gitTools · commandToolsThe orchestrator never imports fs/promises, simple-git, or execa
directly — every side effect goes through ToolRuntime, which enforces an
explicit tool allowlist and blocks path traversal before anything reaches
disk.
Supported providers
| Provider | Env var |
| ------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------- |
| OpenAI | OPENAI_API_KEY |
| Anthropic | ANTHROPIC_API_KEY |
| Groq | GROQ_API_KEY |
| Gemini | GEMINI_API_KEY |
| Ollama | OLLAMA_HOST (defaults to http://localhost:11434) |
| OpenRouter | OPENROUTER_API_KEY |
| Azure OpenAI | AZURE_OPENAI_API_KEY, AZURE_OPENAI_ENDPOINT, AZURE_OPENAI_DEPLOYMENT |
Switching providers is a config change, never a code change:
sj2 config set provider anthropicLicense
