Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Super-Retry 🔄

A robust retry library for Node.js with middleware support, policy-driven configurations, and OpenTelemetry integration.

npm version GitHub stars GitHub issues Open in GitHub

🚀 Getting Started

Installation

npm install super-retry

Quick Start

import { Retry } from 'super-retry';

const retry = new Retry({
  strategy: 'exponential',
  maxAttempts: 3,
  initialDelayMs: 1000
});

const result = await retry.execute(async () => {
  const response = await fetch('https://api.example.com/data');
  if (!response.ok) throw new Error('API request failed');
  return response.json();
});

🌟 Key Features

| Feature | Description | |------------------------|-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 🧩 Modular Middleware | Extend functionality with custom middleware layers | | 📜 Declarative Policies| Configure retry behavior via JSON/YAML files | | 🔄 Multiple Strategies | Built-in + custom backoff algorithms (Fibonacci, Jitter, etc.) | | 📊 Observability Ready | Native OpenTelemetry integration for production monitoring | | 🤖 AI/LLM Optimized | Special handling for large language model API patterns | | 🛠 Type Safe | Full TypeScript support with strict type checking |

📚 Examples & Guides

Explore our comprehensive examples on GitHub:

graph TD
  A[Start] --> B{Success?}
  B -->|Yes| C[Return Result]
  B -->|No| D[Calculate Delay]
  D --> E[Wait]
  E --> F{Attempts Left?}
  F -->|Yes| B
  F -->|No| G[Throw Error]

🛠 Advanced Usage

Custom Strategies

import { Retry, registerStrategy } from 'super-retry';

// Register custom Fibonacci strategy
registerStrategy('fibonacci', (attempt: number, base: number) =>
  [0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8][attempt] * base
);

const retry = new Retry({
  strategy: 'fibonacci',
  maxAttempts: 5,
  initialDelayMs: 100
});

Middleware Pipeline

const retry = new Retry({ maxAttempts: 3 })
  .use(async (task, ctx, next) => {
    const start = Date.now();
    try {
      return await next();
    } finally {
      console.log(`Attempt ${ctx.attempt+1} took ${Date.now()-start}ms`);
    }
  })
  .use(async (task, ctx, next) => {
    try {
      return await next();
    } catch (error) {
      console.error(`Attempt ${ctx.attempt+1} failed:`, error);
      throw error;
    }
  });

🚨 Error Handling Best Practices

// Conditional retry example
const retry = new Retry({
  strategy: 'exponential',
  maxAttempts: 3,
  initialDelayMs: 1000,
  retryIf: (error: unknown) => {
    if (error instanceof NetworkError) return true;
    if (error instanceof APIError) return error.statusCode === 429;
    return false;
  }
});

📊 Observability Integration

import { withOpenTelemetry } from 'super-retry/observability';

const retry = new Retry({ /* config */ });
withOpenTelemetry(retry);

// All retries now emit OpenTelemetry spans
