Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

WebSocket relay server for swarming multiplayer collaboration

Readme

swarming-collab-server

WebSocket relay for multiplayer swarming sessions. Peers join a room and share cursors, cameras, node selections, annotations and presenter mode in real time. The server keeps no database: rooms live in memory and are cleaned up five minutes after the last peer leaves.

Run

npx swarming-collab-server              # listens on ws://0.0.0.0:4444
PORT=8080 npx swarming-collab-server    # custom port

Or install it and use the swarming-collab binary:

npm install -g swarming-collab-server
swarming-collab

Docker

The package ships its Dockerfile:

docker build -t swarming-collab node_modules/swarming-collab-server
docker run -p 4444:4444 swarming-collab

Put it behind a TLS-terminating proxy and connect clients to wss://your-host.

Protocol

Every message is a JSON object with a type.

Client to server

| type | Fields | Effect | |---|---|---| | join | room, username, color? | Join (or create) a room. Must be sent first. | | cursor | position: [x, y, z] \| null | Share the 3D cursor. | | camera | position: [x, y, z], target: [x, y, z] | Share the camera. | | select | nodeId: string \| null | Share the selected node. | | annotate | annotation: { nodeId, text, createdAt } | Add an annotation for the room. | | removeAnnotation | annotationId | Remove an annotation. | | presenter | enabled: boolean | Take or release presenter mode. | | ping | | Keep-alive; answered with pong. |

Server to client

| type | Payload | |---|---| | welcome | peerId, peers, annotations for the room you joined. | | peerJoined / peerLeft | peer / peerId. | | peerUpdate | peerId, update (cursor, camera, selectedNode, ...). | | annotation / annotationRemoved | annotation / annotationId. | | presenterChanged | peerId, or null when nobody presents. | | pong | Reply to ping. |

Example client

const ws = new WebSocket('ws://localhost:4444');

ws.onopen = () => {
  ws.send(JSON.stringify({ type: 'join', room: 'demo', username: 'ada', color: '#818cf8' }));
  ws.send(JSON.stringify({ type: 'select', nodeId: 'hub-1' }));
};

ws.onmessage = (event) => {
  const msg = JSON.parse(event.data);
  if (msg.type === 'peerUpdate') console.log(msg.peerId, msg.update);
};
