Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

sync-tonic

v1.0.0

Published

The definitive toolkit for cross-tab state synchronization in modern web applications. High-performance, type-safe, and zero-dependency.

Readme

SyncTonic

A lightweight, type-safe, and high-performance library for synchronizing application state across multiple browser tabs using the BroadcastChannel API.

Core Philosophy: Data Consistency in Distributed Client-side Systems

SyncTonic is designed as a infrastructure-level solution for UI synchronization problems. In a modern multi-tab context, browser applications behave as distributed systems. SyncTonic ensures data consistency across these instances using an event-driven architecture and a Last-Write-Wins (LWW) conflict resolution strategy.

Features

  • Zero Dependency: Core logic is standalone and minimal.
  • Type Safe: Full TypeScript support with generics.
  • Event-Driven: Leverages native BroadcastChannel for real-time updates.
  • Conflict Resolution: Timestamp-based synchronization to handle concurrent updates.
  • React Integration: Includes a first-class useTabSync hook.

Installation

npm install sync-tonic

Usage

Core API (Vanilla JS/TS)

import { createTabSync } from 'sync-tonic';

interface AppState {
  count: number;
}

const synchronizer = createTabSync<AppState>('my-app-channel');

// Subscribe to updates from other tabs
synchronizer.subscribe((newState) => {
  console.log('State updated from another tab:', newState);
});

// Broadcast state to all other tabs
synchronizer.publish({ count: 42 });

React Integration

import { useTabSync } from 'sync-tonic/react';

function Counter() {
  const [count, setCount] = useTabSync<number>('counter-sync', 0);

  return (
    <div>
      <p>Count: {count}</p>
      <button onClick={() => setCount(count + 1)}>Increment</button>
    </div>
  );
}

Strategic Architecture

SyncTonic addresses the challenge of state divergence in client-side applications. By treating each tab as a node in a decentralized network, it provides a robust mechanism for data consistency without the overhead of a backend coordinator.

  • Communication Layer: BroadcastChannel provides a low-latency, cross-context message bus.
  • Concurrency Model: High-resolution timestamps are used to order events, ensuring that the latest intent always prevails across all nodes.
  • Memory Management: Automatic cleanup of channels and subscribers to prevent leaks in long-lived sessions.
