Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

tabby-keepass-ssh

A Tabby plugin that automatically fills SSH passwords and TOTP codes from a KeePass database during keyboard-interactive authentication — no manual copy-paste required.

Features

  • Password auto-fill — matches KeePass entries by ssh://host:port URL and pre-fills the password field automatically
  • TOTP auto-fill — generates the current TOTP code from the KeePass entry and submits it automatically
  • Full auto-submit — both password and TOTP panels are submitted without any user interaction
  • Secure master password — stored in the OS keychain (macOS Keychain / libsecret / Windows Credential Manager), never written to disk in plaintext
  • KDBX4 support — argon2 key derivation via hash-wasm
  • Live reload — detects .kdbx file changes via fs.watch and clears the cache automatically
  • Duplicate URL handling — when multiple entries share the same URL, Tabby's selector UI lets you choose

Prerequisites

  • Tabby with the tabby-ssh plugin
  • A KeePass database (.kdbx) with SSH entries

KeePass entry format

Each SSH entry must have its URL field set to:

ssh://hostname
ssh://hostname:port

Examples:

TOTP setup

If the SSH server requires TOTP (e.g. Google Authenticator), store the TOTP secret in the same entry using any of these field names:

Installation

Option A — Tabby Plugin Manager (recommended)

Search for tabby-keepass-ssh in Tabby Settings → Plugins and click Install. Restart Tabby when prompted.

Option B — From source

Requirements: Node.js 18 or later

git clone <this-repo>
cd tabby-ssh-keepass
npm install
npm run build
npm run install-plugin

npm run install-plugin copies the built files to the correct Tabby plugin directory:

Restart Tabby after installation.

Setup

  1. Open Tabby Settings → KeePass SSH
  2. Set the path to your .kdbx file
  3. Enter the master password (saved to the OS keychain)
  4. Set the SSH profile's Authentication to Keyboard-interactive

The plugin will auto-fill credentials on every connection.

Security notes

  • The master password is kept in memory only for the duration of a DB open operation and is never written to disk in plaintext.
  • ProtectedValue.getText() is called immediately before use and the result is not retained.
  • Storing the TOTP secret and password in the same KeePass entry is an intentional trade-off for convenience.
