Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Streaming for Tentacles GitHub client

Readme

tentacles-streams

A streaming GitHub client for pagenated results for node.js.

What is Tentacles Streams?

Tentacles Streams is an adapter for the Tentacles GitHub client. It takes pagenated results from the GitHub API and returns a stream of results. All pages of results will automatically be fetched from GitHub.

Using Tentacles Streams

Install Tentacles Streams:

$ npm install tentacles-streams --save
var TentaclesStreams = require('tentacles-streams');

/* Options are passed through to the tentacles client. */
var client = new TentaclesStreams({ accessToken: process.env.GITHUB_ACCESS_TOKEN });

/* Creates a ReadableStream in object stream mode. Options are passed through to Tentacles */
var stream = client.issue.listAllVisibleForAuthUser({ query: { state: 'all', per_page: 10 /* Will default to 100 */ } });

/* Pipe the stream somewhere */
stream.pipe(issueProcessor);

/* .. or use events .. */
stream.on('data', function(issue) {
  /* Do something with the issue */
});

stream.on('end', function() {
  /* All results have been read */
});

stream.on('error', function(err) {
  /* An error occurred */
});

Batching Pages

You can configure Tentacles Streams to pump the each page of results through as an hash of { items: [], page: n, lastPage: m }, rather than individual items. To do this, set { stream: { batchPages: true } } in the options hash.

var TentaclesStreams = require('tentacles-streams');

var client = new TentaclesStreams();
var stream = client.issue.listForRepo('ruby/ruby', { stream: { batchPages: true } });

stream.on('data', function(data) {
  console.log(data.items.length); // 100 (or `per_page`) items
  console.log(data.page); // 1 - n
  console.log(data.lastPage); // n
});

Backpressure, Pause and Resume

The streams support backpressure and pause and resume

var TentaclesStreams = require('tentacles-streams');

var client = new TentaclesStreams();
var stream = client.issue.listForRepo('ruby/ruby');

var count = 0;
stream.on('data', function(issue) {
  console.log(issue);

  /* Pause for 1s every hundred issues */
  if (++count % 100 === 0) {
    stream.pause();
    setTimeout(function() {
      stream.resume();
    }, 1000);
  }
});

Skipping results

If you want to skip some pages in the results, set { query: { page: X } } in the options hash.

var TentaclesStreams = require('tentacles-streams');

var client = new TentaclesStreams();
var stream = client.issue.listForRepo('ruby/ruby', { query: { page: 5 } });

/* Will start streaming from page 5 of results */
