Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

text-autowidth-middle-ellipsis

v0.0.1

Published

A utility that applies middle ellipsis to text that doesn't fit its container

Readme

text-autowidth-middle-ellipsis

A lightweight utility that automatically applies middle ellipsis to text that doesn't fit within its container width.

Rather than the standard truncation at the end ("Long text...") this library truncates from the middle ("Long...text"), preserving both the beginning and end of your text, which is often more informative.

Installation

npm install text-autowidth-middle-ellipsis

or

yarn add text-autowidth-middle-ellipsis

Features

  • 🔍 Automatically detects container width and applies ellipsis as needed
  • 🎯 Applies ellipsis in the middle of text instead of the end
  • 🔄 Dynamically adjusts to container size
  • 🛡️ Comprehensive error handling and edge case management
  • 🌐 Works in all modern browsers

Usage

import { textAutoWidthMiddleEllipsis } from 'text-autowidth-middle-ellipsis';

// Basic usage
const element = document.getElementById('my-element');
textAutoWidthMiddleEllipsis(element, 'This is a very long text that will be truncated with ellipsis in the middle');

// Inside a React component
useEffect(() => {
  if (containerRef.current) {
    textAutoWidthMiddleEllipsis(
      containerRef.current,
      'Long file name with extension.pdf'
    );
  }
}, [containerRef]);

API

function textAutoWidthMiddleEllipsis(
  el: HTMLElement | null | undefined,
  fullText: string | null | undefined
): void

Parameters

  • el: The HTML element to apply text to. Required.
  • fullText: The complete text to display with ellipsis if needed.

Error Handling

The function includes comprehensive error handling:

  • Throws an error when el is null or undefined
  • Warns and uses empty string when fullText is null or undefined
  • Handles containers with zero or negative width
  • Catches and logs errors that might occur during processing
  • Falls back to full text if any error occurs

Examples

Basic Example

<div id="filename" style="width: 200px; white-space: nowrap; overflow: hidden;">
  <!-- Text will be inserted here -->
</div>

<script>
  const element = document.getElementById('filename');
  textAutoWidthMiddleEllipsis(element, 'very-long-filename-with-detailed-description.txt');
  // Result: "very-long-file...description.txt"
</script>

Dynamic Width Example

// Update text when container width changes
window.addEventListener('resize', () => {
  const element = document.getElementById('filename');
  textAutoWidthMiddleEllipsis(element, 'very-long-filename-with-detailed-description.txt');
});

Browser Compatibility

Works in all modern browsers that support ES2021 features. The utility checks for browser environment availability and provides appropriate error handling.
