Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Screen-space ambient occlusion for Three.js TSL and WebGPU.

N8AO WebGPU

Screen-space ambient occlusion for Three.js r186, written in TypeScript and TSL for native WebGPU.

A fork of N8python/n8ao, maintained as three-n8ao-webgpu.

Get started

npm install three-n8ao-webgpu three@~0.186.0
import { RenderPipeline } from "three/webgpu";
import { n8ao } from "three-n8ao-webgpu";

// renderer is an initialized WebGPURenderer; scene and camera are yours.
const ao = n8ao(scene, camera, { aoRadius: 1.5, intensity: 3 });
const pipeline = new RenderPipeline(renderer);
pipeline.outputNode = ao;
renderer.setAnimationLoop(() => pipeline.render());

Requires native WebGPU, HTTPS or localhost, and one shared copy of Three.js. See the quick start for initialization, resizing and disposal. The npm install command applies once v1 is published; before then, install the tarball produced by npm pack.

Features

  • World-space and screen-space radius, quality presets and temporal accumulation.
  • Bilateral and neural denoising, with a typed interface for custom TSL denoisers.
  • Full and half resolution, perspective and orthographic cameras, logarithmic and reversed depth.
  • Transparency-aware composition, fog, AO-only and split-screen views.
  • Native RenderPipeline integration and explicit render adapters.
  • Strict TypeScript, generated declarations, and independently owned render resources.

Rendering can differ from the WebGL original. The visual regression suite verifies preservation of the native WebGPU output, not bitwise WebGL equivalence. Read compatibility and testing.

Explore locally

npm ci
npm run dev

The local website includes documentation and six procedural scenes: contact shadows, a half-resolution courtyard, neural-filtered objects, transparent layers, fine detail and logarithmic depth. Orbit, zoom, change settings and copy a configuration into your application. Ambient occlusion is a real-time screen-space effect, not a lightmap baker.

Development

npm run check # TypeScript, unit tests, library and website builds
npm run build # Package in dist/
npm run build:docs # Static website in site-dist/

Run the optional browser regression suite to verify rendering changes. See CONTRIBUTING.md for the architecture and RELEASING.md for GitHub Pages and npm setup.
