Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Build Status NPM Package NPM Downloads

A particle engine for THREE.js. An effect is a JSON document describing emitters — points or instanced meshes — with their textures, zones, and timelines. Load one, add it to your scene as a Group, and call update() once per frame.

Installation

npm install three-particles

The library is ESM-only and expects three >=0.186.1 <0.187.0 as a peer dependency.

Usage

import { ParticleEffect, ParticleEffectLoader } from 'three-particles'

const loader = new ParticleEffectLoader()
const model = await loader.loadAsync('./fire.json')

const effect = new ParticleEffect(model)
scene.add(effect)

// Once per frame, with the frame delta in seconds:
effect.update(delta)

fire.json is a serialized ParticleEffectModel. The example app in packages/example shows a complete scene with both render paths and playback controls, also deployed as the live demo.

Documentation

  • Usage guide — installation, the effect JSON format (emitters, timelines, zones, eases), textures, materials and render paths, cleanup, and known limitations.
  • Live demo — the example app deployed to GitHub Pages; its README documents the playback controls.

API overview

  • ParticleEffectLoader — a standard THREE.Loader that fetches and parses an effect JSON file into a ParticleEffectModel.
  • ParticleEffect — a THREE.Group wrapping the loaded model; add it to your scene and drive it with update(deltaSeconds).
  • model — the ParticleEffectModel schema with parse* helpers and defaults, for building or modifying effects in code.
  • materialDefaults — createCircleGradientTexture() and getDefaultRadial() for stock particle textures.

Type declarations ship with the package and are referenced by its types field.

Development

The repo is a Lerna monorepo with two workspaces: the three-particles library and a private Vite example app.

| Command | What it does | | ------------------ | --------------------------------------------- | | npm ci | Install dependencies | | npm run build | Build both workspaces | | npm test | Jest unit tests for the library | | npm run lint | Prettier check + ESLint | | npm run validate | build + lint + test — the same checks CI runs | | npm run serve | Serve the built www/ output |

To hack on the example app with hot reload: cd packages/example && npx vite --host, then open http://localhost:5173.
