Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Local MCP server exposing an already-vendored toolcrib install's ai-docs content to AI coding agents

Readme

toolcrib-mcp

A local MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that reads an already-vendored toolcrib install's ai-docs/ content and exposes it to AI coding agents as callable tools — list_components, get_component, search_components, and more — instead of relying on an agent to read those files directly.

It ships zero vendored content of its own. It only ever reads whatever's already sitting in the ./toolcrib/ folder it's pointed at, so it can never describe a version newer than what's actually in your project.

This is purely additive: toolcrib init/merge/doctor and the static ai-docs/ files work exactly as they always have, with or without this installed. Nothing here replaces them.

Setup

Add it to your MCP host's config, pointed at your project's vendored toolcrib/ folder:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "toolcrib": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["toolcrib-mcp", "--root", "./toolcrib"]
    }
  }
}
  • Claude Code: project-level .mcp.json at your repo root.
  • Cursor: .cursor/mcp.json.
  • Claude Desktop: claude_desktop_config.json (see Claude Desktop's own docs for its location on your OS).

Omit --root to auto-detect: it walks upward from the current directory looking for toolcrib/.toolcrib-lock.json.

Tools

| Tool | What it returns | |---|---| | get_install_info | The exact vendored version and directory path this server is serving, whether the test suite (--with-tests) is installed, plus compatibilityWarning (null, or a message) if the vendored install's real ai-docs/ shape doesn't match one this server release has actually been verified against — see src/lib/compatibility.js. | | list_categories | Every component category. | | list_components | Component names + one-line descriptions, optionally filtered by category. | | get_component | Full detail for one component — props, types, defaults, required flags, slots, constraints. | | search_components | Fuzzy search across name/description/category — use this when you don't know the exact component name. | | list_examples | The worked examples available for non-obvious mechanisms (event bus sticky replay, router integration, etc.). | | get_example | One worked example's full content. | | get_core_doc | CORE.md, whole or one section. | | get_event_channels | The event bus's channel/payload reference and helper methods, or one channel by name. | | get_theme_system | The theme system reference (CSS variable names/roles, supported harmonies, theme slices) and the z-index scale. This is documentation, not a live resolver — it does not compute actual CSS values for a given theme config. | | list_test_source | The real component test files vendored by toolcrib init --with-tests, with an inferred component name where the filename follows the X.test.tsx convention. Reports isInstalled: false with an empty list if this project never opted in. | | get_test_source | One vendored test file's full content by its exact relative path. Real reference source — not guaranteed runnable as-is if your project uses a different test runner than Vitest. | | get_test_dependencies_patch | A real unified diff proposing the test suite's own peer dependencies (vitest, @testing-library/react, etc.) be added to your project's package.json devDependencies — computed by reading your real package.json directly, never modified. This server has no write access to your project at all; the calling agent decides whether to apply, adapt, or ignore it. |

Development

npm install
npm test # unit tests, in-process, no subprocess spawned
node integration-test/run.mjs # real subprocess + real MCP client, against this repo's own ai-docs/
