Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

ui-fly

Lightweight Electron CLI for serving and screenshotting HTML UIs.

A minimalist alternative to heavy design tools — just give it an HTML file and it renders it in a native Electron window. No servers, no databases, no complex architecture.

Install

npm install -g ui-fly

Or use directly with npx:

npx ui-fly serve ./my-ui/index.html

Commands

serve

Launch an HTML file or directory in an Electron window.

ui-fly serve ./my-ui/index.html
ui-fly serve ./my-ui/ --width 1200 --height 800 --title "My App"
ui-fly serve ./my-ui/ --fullscreen

Options:

  • --width <number> — Window width (default: 1280)
  • --height <number> — Window height (default: 800)
  • --title <string> — Window title
  • --fullscreen — Open in fullscreen mode
  • --verbose — Enable verbose logging
  • --quiet — Suppress non-error output

screenshot

Capture a screenshot of a rendered HTML UI.

ui-fly screenshot ./my-ui/index.html --output ./out.png
ui-fly screenshot ./my-ui/index.html --output ./out.jpg --format jpg --fullpage
ui-fly screenshot ./my-ui/index.html --output ./out.png --width 1920 --height 1080 --wait 2000
ui-fly screenshot ./my-ui/index.html --output ./out.png --headless --selector "#app"

Options:

  • -o, --output <path> — Output file path
  • --format <png|jpg> — Image format (default: png)
  • --width <number> — Viewport width (default: 1280)
  • --height <number> — Viewport height (default: 800)
  • --wait <ms> — Wait milliseconds before capturing (default: 0)
  • --fullpage — Capture the full scrollable page
  • --selector <selector> — Capture a specific DOM element
  • --headless — Hide the window during capture
  • --json — Output result as JSON
  • --verbose — Enable verbose logging
  • --quiet — Suppress non-error output

Claude Code Skill

To use ui-fly as a Claude Code skill, copy SKILL.md to your project's .claude/skills/ directory (create it if needed):

mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp /path/to/ui-fly/SKILL.md .claude/skills/ui-fly.md

Or copy it to your global skills directory at ~/.claude/skills/.

Once installed, the skill is available in Claude Code sessions.

Usage from a Claude Code Skill

ui-fly is designed to be called from skills via shell commands:

// In a skill
await bash`ui-fly serve ./generated-ui/index.html --width 1440 --height 900`;

// Screenshot for review
const result = await bash`ui-fly screenshot ./generated-ui/index.html --output ./preview.png --headless --json`;
const { path } = JSON.parse(result.stdout);

Development

npm install
npm run build
npm run dev # Watch mode
