Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

use-reducer-enhancer ✨

This package allows you to use React Hooks' useReducer hook with standard Redux middleware.

Work with Redux middleware using React Hooks 🎣

This package appears to work for basic usecases in non performance critical settings but I would consider it experimental for the time being.

So far this library has been found to work with:

...more to come

Install

$ npm install --save use-reducer-enhancer

or

$ yarn add use-reducer-enhancer

API

The package provides a named export applyMiddleware that can create an enahancer that can be used to wrap useReducer with middleware.

import { applyMiddleware } from "use-reducer-enhancer";

const enhancer = applyMiddleware(thunk, loggingMiddleware);
const useEnhancedReducer = enhancer(useReducer);

Usage Example

import { applyMiddleware } from "use-reducer-enhancer";
import thunk from "redux-thunk";
import React, { useReducer } from "react";

// Enhance useReducer with middleware
const enhancer = applyMiddleware(thunk);
const useReducerWithThunk = enhancer(useReducer);

const INCREMENT = "INCREMENT";
const DECREMENT = "DECREMENT";
const LOADING = "LOADING";

function incrementSlowly() {
  return (dispatch, getState) => {
    const state = getState();
    if (state.loading) return;

    dispatch({ type: LOADING });

    setTimeout(() => {
      dispatch({ type: INCREMENT });
    }, 300);
  };
}

function decrementSlowly() {
  return (dispatch, getState) => {
    const state = getState();
    if (state.loading) return;

    dispatch({ type: LOADING });

    setTimeout(() => {
      dispatch({ type: DECREMENT });
    }, 300);
  };
}

function reducer(state, action) {
  switch (action.type) {
    case INCREMENT: {
      return {
        ...state,
        count: state.count + 1,
        loading: false
      };
    }
    case DECREMENT: {
      return {
        ...state,
        count: state.count - 1,
        loading: false
      };
    }
    case LOADING: {
      return {
        ...state,
        loading: true
      };
    }
    default:
  }
}

export default function Counter({ initState = { count: 0 } }) {
  // Use the new `useReducer` like the normal hook
  const [state, dispatch] = useReducerWithThunk(reducer, initState);

  return (
    <div>
      <div>Count: {state.count}</div>
      <button onClick={() => dispatch(incrementSlowly())}>+</button>
      <button onClick={() => dispatch(decrementSlowly())}>-</button>
      {state.loading && <div>Hold on...</div>}
    </div>
  );
}

Why did you build this?

I needed a way to manage asynchronous code within state diaspatch logic and thought it made sense to wrap the existing middleware patterns we use in redux so they can be applied to useReducer.
