Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

use-spotify-song

A React hook to fetch your currently playing or your most recently played Spotify song.

Features

  • 🌎 Universal: provides esm and cjs modules.
  • 🌳 Tree shaking: grab only what you need.
  • 💪 Strongly typed: Typescript support.

Getting Started

yarn add use-spotify-song

You'll need to register an application with Spotify for Developers to use this hook. You'll also need an access token from Spotify's OAuth.

use-spotify-song uses SWR, a react hook for data fetching, under the hood. Most of SWR's data-fetching capabilitities available through the package are exposed through this hook as well.

Examples

Provide the context to your application and specify your access token.

import { SpotifySongConfig } from 'use-spotify-song';

<SpotifySongConfig.Provider value={{ accessToken }}>{children}</SpotifySongConfig.Provider>;

Access the song and a loading state from the hook.

import { useSpotifySong } from 'use-spotify-song';

const Component = () => {
  const { song, isLoading } = useSpotifySong();

  return <p>{isLoading ? 'Loading...' : song?.name}</p>;
};

use-spotify-song supports refreshing on an interval (polling). Provide a number in milliseconds in the configuration!

<SpotifySongConfig.Provider value={{ accessToken, config: { refreshInterval: 5000 } }}>
  ...
</SpotifySongConfig.Provider>

Support for Suspense, offered by React 18, is available. Turn it on in the configuration to allow for data loading that "just works".

<SpotifySongConfig.Provider value={{ accessToken, config: { suspense: true } }}>
  ...
</SpotifySongConfig.Provider>
const Parent = () => {
  return (
    <Suspense fallback={<p>Loading...</p>}>
      <Child />
    </Suspense>
  );
};

const Child = () => {
  const { song } = useSpotifySong();

  return <p>{song?.name}</p>;
};

One may also access a callback to revalidate the song on their own prerogative, as well as a state for if the song is validating.

const Component = () => {
  const { song, isLoading, update, isUpdating } = useSpotifySong();

  return (
    <>
      <p>{song?.name}</p>
      <button onClick={() => update()}>Get new song!</button>
      {isUpdating && <span>Updating...</span>}
    </>
  );
};

Contribution Instructions

To contribute, clone this repo and, preferably as descriptive as possible, create a new branch.

  • Ex: Branch name: feature/current-podcast or bug/polling

After changes are finished, be sure to let ESLint and Prettier enforce and codify. Make sure unit tests are passing. If additional code was written, be sure to include unit tests to ensure code quality.
