Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

useWatchStorage Hook

Overview

The useWatchStorage hook provides a convenient way to synchronize Vue reactive state with browser storage (either localStorage or sessionStorage). This enables data persistence across sessions and tabs while automatically updating the stored value when changes occur.

Installation

yarn add use-watch-storage

Parameters

  • key (string): The key under which the value will be stored in the browser storage.
  • initialValue (Value): The initial value to be stored if no value is found under the specified key.
  • options (object, optional): Additional configuration options. storage (boolean): If true, the hook will use localStorage. Defaults to true. session (boolean, optional): If true, the hook will use sessionStorage instead of localStorage.

Return Value

  • storedValue (Ref): A reactive reference to the stored value.
  • updateStoredValue (function): A function to update the stored value. Accepts a single parameter representing the new value.

Usage

import { useWatchStorage } from '@jonorusc/use-watch-storage';

<script setup>
  const [storedValue, setValue] = useWatchStorage('key', 'initialValue');
  // value is now reactive and will be stored in localStorage under the key 'key'

  setValue('newValue');
  //or
  state.value = 'newValue';
  // value is now 'newValue' and is stored in localStorage

</script>

<template>
  <div>{{ value }}</div>
</template>

Behavior

  • On component mount, the hook retrieves the stored value from the browser storage if available, falling back to the provided initialValue.
  • Changes to the stored value are automatically synchronized with the browser storage.
  • If changes are made in another tab or window, the hook listens for storage events and updates the stored value accordingly.
  • The hook also includes a fallback mechanism to watch for changes within the same tab via a requestAnimationFrame loop.

Error Handling

  • If errors occur during storage operations (e.g., parsing JSON), appropriate error messages are logged to the console.
  • Optionally, the hook can revert to the initial value in case of errors.

Dependencies

@vue/reactivity: For reactive state management in Vue. lodash: For utility functions such as deep equality comparison.

Notes

Avoid using setInterval for watching storage changes, as it may consume excessive resources and slow down the browser.
