Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

user-localization-settings

User localization settings for React Native.

Installation

// with expo
expo install user-localization-settings
// with yarn
yarn add user-localization-settings
// with npm
npm install --save user-localization-settings

Usage

This library uses the ISO locale api along with expo-localization under the hood for default settings, and expo-location for getting hyper-local settings (optional).

import {
  useLocalizationSettings,
  LocalizationSettingsProvider,
} from 'user-localization-settings';

function Component() {
  const {
    isFetchingLocalizationSettings,
    localizationSettingsError,
    localizationSettings,
    setLocalizationSettings,
  } = useLocalizationSettings();

  return (
    <View style={{ flex: 1, justifyContent: 'center', alignItems: 'center' }}>
      {isFetchingLocalizationSettings ? (
        <ActivityIndicator />
      ) : localizationError : (
        <Text>Something went wrong.</Text>
      ) : (
        <Button
          onPress={() =>
            setLocalizationSettings({
              ...localizationSettings,
              temperatureUnit:
                localizationSettings.temperatureUnit === 'celsius'
                  ? 'fahrenheit'
                  : 'celsius',
            })
          }
        >
          <Text>Temperature Unit: {localizationSettings.temperatureUnit}</Text>
        </Button>
      )}
    </View>
  );
}

function App() {
  return (
    <LocalizationSettingsProvider>
      <Component />
    </LocalizationSettingsProvider>
  );
}

Settings are automatically persisted to AsyncStorage under the exported storage key USER_LOCALIZATION_SETTINGS_STORAGE_KEY.

<LocalizationSettingsProvider />

The context provider that handles user settings.

| Parameter | Type | Description | Default | | ------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------- | | i18n | string | An i18n locale code to pass (if using react-i18next, etc.) Used to look up different formats based on locale. | null | | shouldUseLocation | Whether or not to use the user's location to get hyper-local localization defaults. This will prompt the user for permission if not already granted. | false |

useLocalizationSettings()

A hook that provides the context values.

export type LocalizationSettingsContext = {
  isFetchingLocalizationSettings: boolean;
  localizationSettingsError: Error | null;
  localizationSettings: LocalizationSettings;
  setLocalizationSettings: (e: LocalizationSettings) => void;
};

export type LocalizationSettings = {
  coordinates: {
    latitude: number;
    longitude: number;
  } | null;
  region: string | null;
  timezone: string | null;
  measurementSystem: MeasurementSystem | null;
  distanceUnit: DistanceUnit | null;
  temperatureUnit: TemperatureUnit | null;
  timeFormat: TimeFormat | null;
  dateFormat: string | null;
  weekStartDay: WeekStartDay | null;
  currency: string | null;
};

export type TimeFormat = '12hr' | '24hr' | 'mixed';

export type WeekStartDay = 'friday' | 'saturday' | 'sunday' | 'monday';

export type MeasurementSystem = 'metric' | 'imperial';

export type DistanceUnit = 'kilometer' | 'mile';

export type TemperatureUnit = 'celsius' | 'fahrenheit';
