Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

uwcheck

v1.6.0

Published

One calendar and to-do list for UW Canvas, Ed and CSE course-website deadlines.

Readme

Install

  1. Install Node.js (the LTS version).

  2. Open a new terminal window (on Windows, Command Prompt: PowerShell may refuse to run npx) and run:

    npx uwcheck@latest --install

If it asks Ok to proceed?, press Enter.

On Windows, if you see running scripts is disabled on this system, you're in PowerShell: type npx.cmd instead of npx, or open Command Prompt.

  3. UWCheck opens on Options → Your courses. Fill in:

  4. Click Save & sync.

That's it. From now on, open UWCheck like any other app: search for it in the Start menu, Spotlight or your app launcher (on Windows it's on your desktop too). It runs in the background, so you can close the terminal. When an update is out, an Update button appears in the header: click it and UWCheck updates and restarts itself.

| Command | What it does | |---|---| | npx uwcheck@latest --install | Run again if the app ever stops opening, for example after reinstalling Node.js. | | npx uwcheck@latest --stop | Stop the background server. | | npx uwcheck@latest --uninstall | Remove the app. Your settings are kept. | | npx uwcheck@latest | Use UWCheck without installing the app. Keep the terminal open while you do. |

Does uwcheck --version show an old version? That's a copy from an older npm install -g uwcheck. The app doesn't use it, so remove it with npm uninstall -g uwcheck.

Optional: course websites

UW CSE courses often list work on their assignments.html page before it's released on Ed. Add them under Options → Your courses → Course websites, one per line:

https://courses.cs.washington.edu/courses/cse351/26au/assignments.html

UWCheck names the course from the URL (CSE 351); add = name after it to pick another. The same section lets you limit or rename Ed and Canvas courses (course id = name).

Good to know

  • Reminders: turn them on in Options → Preferences to get a notification a day and 2 hours before each deadline, while UWCheck is open.
  • Your own calendar app: Options → Preferences has a feed address (http://localhost:7351/calendar.ics): click Subscribe to add it to Apple Calendar or Outlook on the same computer.
  • Keyboard: press ? (or Options → Keyboard shortcuts) for shortcuts. / searches, J/K move through the list, X ticks.

Privacy

Everything runs on your computer and listens only on 127.0.0.1. Your Canvas feed URL and Ed token are saved in ~/.uwcheck/config.json and sent only to Canvas and Ed. Treat that folder like a password.

Running from source

git clone https://github.com/n473CL0/uwcheck.git
cd uwcheck
npm start
