Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v-outside-click

requires Vue 2.6+

Vue directive, which executes callback passed as value, on body click event, when dynamic argument is true, and element, which has directive binded is not in event composed path.

Installation

Just import and install it like vue.js plugin.

import vOutsideClick from 'v-outside-click';

Vue.use(vOutsideClick);

You can also import just directive and add custom name to it, like shown below:

import {outsideClickDirective} from 'v-outside-click';

Vue.directive('custom-outside-name', outsideClickDirective);

Usage

Let's say you have some custom drop down list component, and you want to close it when user clicks outside it. You can solve this problem in different ways. One solution is to set event listener on body element, and stop propagation for click event on your component, but that's not very good practice. Other is to check event composed path, and execute close method if main element is not there (this one's better). v-outside-click directive helps you implement this solution easier. Example below should make it clear:

// dropdownExample.vue

<template>
  <div
    class="dropdown"
    v-outside-click:[isOpen]="close"
  >
    <button
      class="dropdown__toggle"
      @click="toggleList"
    >
      Toggle list
    </button>
    <ul
      v-if="isOpen"
      class="dropdown__list"
    >
      <li>Some list element</li>
      <li>Some other element</li>
      <li>Last element</li>
    </ul>
  </div>
</template>

<script>
  export default {
    data() {
      return {
        isOpen: false
      };
    },
    methods: {
      toggleList() {
        this.isOpen = !this.isOpen;
      },
      close() {
        this.isOpen = false;
      }
    }
  };
</script>

Directive adds event listener to body click events only, if passed attribute is true, otherwise it removes event listener.
