Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

vfunc.js

UI as plain functions. No build, no virtual DOM — one script file.

Status: 1.0.0. The engine (layer 1) and the components (layer 2) are stable and follow semantic versioning.

vfunc.js is a small vanilla JavaScript library for building interactive pages and single-page apps. Its core idea: keep your HTML as it is, and turn only the parts you need to control into vfunc components.

  • No build step — load one <script> and start. No bundler, no JSX, no transpiler. 8.8 KB min+gzip.
  • Works with published HTML — vf.attach adds behavior to markup your designers or publishers already made.
  • Safe by default — vf.html escapes every value by its position and refuses on* attributes, unquoted values and javascript: URLs.
  • Easy for AI to write — a small, explicit API (state, render, delegates, methods). An llms.txt reference, an AGENTS.md template and prompts ship with the package.
  • SPA ready — router, store, i18n and number/date formatting are included.
  • Design-independent — logic and design are separated, so a design can be applied later by changing CSS tokens only.

Install

Script tag (pin the exact version and keep the SRI hash):

<div id="counter"></div>
<script src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/[email protected]/dist/vfunc.min.js"
        integrity="sha384-yTR0o8US3nk+D1XIBAsv1O/lMFA5tV3V021xPo8yxyqnBNSxi1rqINVvBOykAEkK"
        crossorigin="anonymous"></script>
<script src="app.js"></script>
// app.js
const counter = vf.vfunc({
  state: { count: 0 },
  render: (s) => vf.html`<button type="button" data-action="inc">Clicked ${s.count} times</button>`,
  delegates: [{ selector: '[data-action="inc"]', eventType: 'click',
                onEvent: (e) => { e.sender.count++; } }]
});
counter.mount('#counter');

npm (ES module, no bundler needed in the browser either):

npm install vfunc@next
import vf from 'vfunc';

| File | Use | |---|---| | dist/vfunc.min.js | Production, global vf | | dist/vfunc.js | Development, with warnings | | dist/vfunc.esm.min.js, dist/vfunc.esm.js | ES module | | dist/vfunc.legacy.min.js | IE11 and Edge IE mode (ES5, same API) | | css/vfunc.tokens.css | Optional neutral design tokens (--vf-*) | | ai/ | llms.txt, llms-full.txt, AGENTS.md template, prompts, design templates |

Learn

  • Website — getting started, guides, API reference, AI prompts.
  • Examples — 21 runnable samples, no build (source).
  • Starter — a project skeleton with router, store, i18n, theme and version-folder deployment.
  • AI kit — give llms.txt and AGENTS.template.md to your AI assistant.
  • Extending — plugins through vf.use, without modifying vfunc.

Browser support

| Build | Browsers | |---|---| | vfunc.min.js, ESM | Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (desktop and mobile). Tested in Chromium, Firefox and WebKit on every change | | vfunc.legacy.min.js | Internet Explorer 11 and Edge IE mode. Your app code must be ES5 as well |

Layers

| Layer | Contents | Status | |---|---|---| | layer1 | The engine vf.vfunc and helpers (attach, html, router, store, i18n, fmt) | 1.0 | | layer2 | Class-free components (vs* returns markup, vf* returns an instance), grid, chart, third-party adapters (vfunc/ui, vfunc/ui/data, vfunc/adapters/*) | 1.0 | | layer3 | Class-based framework (VClass) and tools | Planned |
