Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Vite plugin to automatically generate index.ts for SVG icons

Readme

vite-plugin-svgr-indexer

A Vite plugin that monitors SVG icon folders and automatically generates index.ts files.

Installation

npm install vite-plugin-svgr vite-plugin-svgr-indexer --save-dev
# or
yarn add vite-plugin-svgr vite-plugin-svgr-indexer -D
# or
pnpm add vite-plugin-svgr vite-plugin-svgr-indexer -D

Usage

// vite.config.js / vite.config.ts
import { defineConfig } from 'vite';
import svgr from 'vite-plugin-svgr';
import svgrIndexer from 'vite-plugin-svgr-indexer';

export default defineConfig({
  plugins: [
    svgr(), // Configure vite-plugin-svgr first
    svgrIndexer({
      // SVG icon directory paths to monitor (required)
      iconDirs: ['src/assets/icons'],
      // Name of the index file to generate (default: 'index.ts')
      indexFileName: 'index.ts',
      // Enable file watching (default: true)
      watch: true,
      // Enable sub folder watching (default: true)
      recursive: true,
      // Prefix to add to component names (default: '')
      componentPrefix: 'Icon'
    }),
  ],
});

TypeScript Support

If you're using TypeScript, add the following to your tsconfig.json:

{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "types": ["vite-plugin-svgr/client"]
  }
}

or there is also a declaration helper for better type inference. Add the following to vite-env.d.ts:

/// <reference types="vite-plugin-svgr/client" />

This will provide proper type definitions for SVG imports.

Features

  • Monitors SVG files in specified directories.
  • Automatically generates index.ts files when SVG files are added, deleted, or modified.
  • The generated index.ts file imports all SVG files as React components and exports them.
  • Creates separate index.ts files for each subdirectory, importing only the SVG files in that directory.
  • Supports adding a prefix to component names (e.g., Icon prefix: arrow.svgIconArrow).

Example

SVG file structure:

src/assets/icons/
  ├── arrow.svg
  ├── close.svg
  ├── menu.svg
  └── navigation/
      ├── back.svg
      └── forward.svg

Generated index.ts in main directory:

import IconArrow from './arrow.svg?react';
import IconClose from './close.svg?react';
import IconMenu from './menu.svg?react';

export {
  IconArrow,
  IconClose,
  IconMenu
};

Generated index.ts in navigation subdirectory:

import IconBack from './back.svg?react';
import IconForward from './forward.svg?react';

export {
  IconBack,
  IconForward
};

Usage in React Components

// Import from main directory
import { IconClose, IconMenu } from './assets/icons';

// Import from subdirectory
import { IconBack } from './assets/icons/navigation';

function App() {
  return (
    <div>
      <IconClose />
      <IconMenu />
      <IconBack />
    </div>
  );
}
