Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v0.0.1-alpha.0

Published

Typed, explainable data repair for TypeScript.

Readme

Install

npm install wandofmagic@alpha

Example

import { spell } from 'wandofmagic';
import { number } from 'wandofmagic/coerce';

type WireUser = {
  age?: string;
  first_name: string;
  password_hash: string;
};

const normalizeUser = spell<WireUser>()
  .rename({
    first_name: 'firstName',
    password_hash: 'passwordHash',
  })
  .trim(['firstName'])
  .coerce('age', number({ integer: true }), { missing: 'skip' })
  .omit(['passwordHash'])
  .build();

const result = normalizeUser.safeRun({
  age: '37',
  first_name: '  Ada  ',
  password_hash: 'private',
});

if (result.ok) {
  console.log(result.value);
  // { age: 37, firstName: 'Ada' }
} else {
  console.error(result.issues);
}

The original object is unchanged. TypeScript knows that age is now an optional number, firstName exists, and passwordHash is gone.

Model

A spell is an immutable transformation plan. Each operation updates the inferred output type, so the type follows the data from its wire shape to its application shape.

Use spell<T>() when a plan will be reused. Use wand(value) for a one-off change:

import { wand } from 'wandofmagic';

const user = wand({ name: '  Ada  ' })
  .trim(['name'])
  .value();

// { name: 'Ada' }

Operations

  • Clean values with trim, coerce, default, and transform.
  • Reshape records with rename, set, copy, move, and derive.
  • Limit output with omit and pick.
  • Apply one reusable spell to an array with collection.

Use a field name for top-level data or a tuple such as ['profile', 'name'] for a deep path. Paths are type-checked and limited to eight segments.

Failures

safeRun() returns { ok: true, value, changes } or { ok: false, issues, changes }. run() returns the value directly and throws WandError on failure. Issues contain stable codes and paths; change records describe what happened without containing field values.

Checked execution is the default and is designed for untrusted boundary data. Trusted execution and generated mappers are advanced performance options for inputs your code already controls.
