Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

WCAG A11y Scanner - reusable accessibility scanner CLI (Pa11y + custom audits + sitemap support)

Readme

WCAG A11y Scanner

CLI for practical WCAG accessibility scanning and compliance sign-off.

What It Does

WCAG A11y Scanner supports two workflows:

  • scan: detailed technical output for fixing issues (JSON + HTML per page)
  • audit: concise pass/fail bill-of-health output for project sign-off

It works with:

  • single pages
  • URL lists
  • XML sitemaps
  • local/staging/live domains

Install

npm install -g wcag-a11y-scanner

Or in a project:

npm install --save-dev wcag-a11y-scanner

For local package development:

cd tools/wcag-a11y-scanner
npm install
npm link

Quick Start

wcag-a11y-scanner init
wcag-a11y-scanner scan page "https://example.local"
wcag-a11y-scanner audit page "https://example.local"

Commands

Detailed Scan (for remediation)

wcag-a11y-scanner scan page "https://example.local/about"
wcag-a11y-scanner scan list "a11y/urls.txt"
wcag-a11y-scanner scan xml "https://example.local/page-sitemap.xml"

Compliance Audit (for sign-off)

Audit uses the same scanner depth as scan mode (WCAG2AAA) and presents a sign-off matrix.

wcag-a11y-scanner audit page "https://example.local"
wcag-a11y-scanner audit list "a11y/urls.txt"
wcag-a11y-scanner audit xml "https://example.local/page-sitemap.xml"

Output

Scan output

  • Default folder: a11y/reports/<YYYY-MM-DD-HHMMSS>/
  • Files: per-page .json + .html, plus batch summary.html

Audit output

  • Default folder: a11y/audits/<YYYY-MM-DD-HHMMSS>/
  • Files:
    • audit.json
    • audit.html
    • per-page scan files used to build the audit

Audit report includes:

  • overall PASS/FAIL badge at WCAG2AAA
  • A / AA / AAA issue totals (for example A (11), AA (0), AAA (62))
  • failed guideline totals separate from raw issue totals
  • individual WCAG success criteria rows with pass/fail and counts
  • criteria examples like 2.4.1, 2.4.10, etc.

WCAG Coverage in Audit Matrix

The audit matrix maps individual success criteria and reports PASS/FAIL per criterion across:

  • Level A
  • Level AA
  • Level AAA

Current matrix includes 86 WCAG criteria used for automated sign-off scoring.

Config

Create .a11y-scanner.json with:

wcag-a11y-scanner init

Example:

{
  "outputDir": "a11y/reports",
  "timeout": 120000,
  "wait": 1000,
  "includeWarnings": true,
  "includeNotices": false,
  "includeAll": false,
  "hideElements": [
    "#cmplz-cookiebanner-container",
    "#cmplz-manage-consent",
    ".grecaptcha-badge",
    "#lightbox"
  ]
}

Override output directory at runtime:

wcag-a11y-scanner audit xml "https://example.local/page-sitemap.xml" --output-dir "./my-audits"

Notes

  • Automated audits are excellent for fast compliance benchmarking and regression checks.
  • Formal accessibility certification still requires manual testing and assistive-technology checks.
