Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

webcam-view

A custom element that shows the webcam, or plays a video in its place, and can key out a green screen.

<script type="module" src="https://unpkg.com/webcam-view"></script>
<webcam-view></webcam-view>
npm install webcam-view
import "webcam-view";
<webcam-view mirror></webcam-view>

<webcam-view> shows the camera, filling its box. Place and size it like any element. Add the mirror attribute to flips the video, ::part(video) styles the video, and view-transition-name keeps it live through transitions. Its stream is a promise of the camera's MediaStream. Set src to a video URL to play that, with sound, instead of the camera (null goes back); video is the <video> it plays.

Set --chromakey to the colour of a backdrop, like a green screen, to key it out and show the page through. It's a custom property, so it inherits and can change with the slide or step:

html[data-slide="title"] webcam-view {
  --chromakey: lime;
}

The backdrop's own colour, as the camera sees it, keys cleanest. --chromakey-similarity (default 0.75) is how far a colour can be from the key and still go: 0 is the key alone, 1 reaches grey. --chromakey-smoothness (0.15) fades colours near that cut-off instead of dropping them, --chromakey-feather (0) blurs the cut over that many camera pixels (2 smooths a webcam's blocky edge; much more leaves a halo, and it doubles the work per frame), and --chromakey-spill (0.2) takes the key's tint off what's left. Keying needs WebGL 2; without it the video shows as is. A src video is keyed too, so a deck-recorder replay keys the same way. A cross-origin src is only keyed if it's served with CORS and video.crossOrigin is set before src; otherwise it plays as is.
