Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v0.1.7

Published

Vietnamese dictionary data with Northern, Central and Southern dialect regions, from Wiktionary via Kaikki.org. Loaded by which-dialect.

which-dialect-vi

Vietnamese dictionary data for which-dialect, with senses tagged Northern, Central and Southern where Wiktionary tags them. Senses without a region tag are listed under all three regions (regionTagged: false).

You normally don't install this package: which-dialect loads its files on demand from jsDelivr.

import { createDictionary } from 'which-dialect'
const vi = createDictionary({ lang: 'vi' })
await vi.searchEnglish('pig', { region: 'Southern' }) // heo, …

Contents

  • data/meta.json: regions, source, license, counts, and the list of files.
  • data/words/<xx>.json: entries by Vietnamese headword, split by the first two letters without diacritics (không → kh).
  • data/en/<xx>.json: English search terms → Vietnamese words.

About 35,000 entries; roughly 1,300 senses carry a region tag (Southern, Central or Northern). North Central Vietnamese counts as Central. Chinese-character (chữ Hán/chữ Nôm) entries and romanizations are left out.

Word frequencies

Each entry's frequency (and each search result's) is a Zipf score from wordfreq by Robyn Speer (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7199437), CC BY-SA 4.0. wordfreq's data comes from Google Books Ngrams (http://books.google.com/ngrams), the Leeds Internet Corpus (University of Leeds Centre for Translation Studies), Wikipedia, ParaCrawl, OPUS OpenSubtitles 2018 (data from the OpenSubtitles project, opensubtitles.org), SUBTLEX word lists by Marc Brysbaert et al. (SUBTLEX is freely available data: http://crr.ugent.be/programs-data/subtitle-frequencies), and word statistics from the Twitter streaming API. Only one score per word in this dictionary is included, not wordfreq's word lists.

This data is derived from Wiktionary through Kaikki.org's wiktextract extraction, and modified (filtered and reshaped) by which-dialect, with word frequencies from wordfreq (see above). It is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0; see LICENSE.
