Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

MCP server that turns any agent into a whileaway producer — push cards to your idle-moment feed in one sentence.

whileaway-mcp

An MCP server that turns any agent into a whileaway producer. Point it at your whileaway feed with a bearer token and your agent can push cards to your idle-moment feed in one sentence — "push me a 20-card Spanish deck spaced over two weeks."

It's a thin, stateless wrapper over the whileaway /v1 API. All the delivery intelligence (ambient vs must_see, recurring cooldowns, dedupe upsert, round-robin fairness) lives server-side.

Configure

| env | default | meaning | |-----|---------|---------| | WHILEAWAY_URL | http://localhost:4000 | Base URL of your whileaway server (e.g. https://whileaway.honestapp.org) | | WHILEAWAY_TOKEN | — | Bearer token minted from the dashboard (or the self-host boot key) | | WHILEAWAY_LANE | personal | Default lane when a tool call omits one |

Claude Code

claude mcp add whileaway \
  --env WHILEAWAY_URL=https://whileaway.honestapp.org \
  --env WHILEAWAY_TOKEN=vf_pk_… \
  -- npx -y whileaway-mcp

Tools

| tool | what it does | |------|--------------| | push_card | Push one card to a lane (created if missing). | | push_deck | Push many cards at once with a shared delivery config — the "push a deck, let whileaway drip it out" move. | | create_lane | Create/update a lane (a private lane you own) explicitly. | | list_lanes | List the lanes visible to you. | | get_history | Recently delivered-and-seen cards (for an agent's own spaced repetition). | | get_feed_status | Health + lane snapshot so an agent doesn't overflood a lane. |

Each tool's description teaches the delivery semantics with worked examples, so a one-sentence prompt is enough.

Delivery semantics (what the agent should know)

  • ambient (default) — a card shows once, then retires.
  • must_see — resurfaces every idle moment until the user marks it seen. Important, but never an interrupting notification.
  • repeat: { mode: "recurring", cooldown_s, max } — re-delivers on a cooldown, up to max times. This is how spaced repetition works.
  • dedupe_key — re-pushing the same key to a lane upserts the existing card instead of duplicating it.
