Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

RN Expo wrapper for WhisperKit Swift package

Readme

whisper-kit-expo is a React Native wrapper for the excellent WhisperKit library which offers fast on-device audio transcription for Apple devices.

Usage

You must first load the transcriber into memory. This can be done in one of two ways:

  • Wrapping the root component in TranscriberInitializer, which loads the transcriber on compnent mount
<TranscriberInitializer>
    <children>
</TranscriberInitializer>
  • Call loadTranscriber() explicitly

After this has been done, transcribe a file by calling transcribe() with the path or URI to the file:

import { transcribe } from 'whisper-kit-expo';
const transcription = await transcribe("path/to/your/audio.{wav,mp3,m4a,flac}")

Note that transcribe() will fail if loadTranscriber() has never been called, and will block if loadTranscriber() has been called but not completed. transcribe() also automatically handles sequential execution with Swift actors, so the function can be called concurrently across as many components as you like.

Installation

This package uses the Expo Modules API to bridge to Swift code, so installation for Expo projects should work out of the box:

npm install whisper-kit-expo

See this article for installation in regular React Native projects.

IMPORTANT: This project uses the cocoapods-spm plugin to allow the WhisperKit SPM package to interoperate with the CocoaPods Expo module. Its use requires the installation of the plugin and the addition of some lines to your Podfile (note that whisper-kit-expo requires a bare workflow for Expo projects). These steps should be automatically handled by npm install, if not, don't panic! Perform the following steps:

Download cocoapods-spm:

sudo gem install cocoapods-spm

Add plugin and dependency to Podfile:

### START WHISPERKIT PLUGIN SCRIPT ###
plugin "cocoapods-spm"

spm_pkg "WhisperKit",
  :url => "https://github.com/argmaxinc/WhisperKit.git",
  :version => "0.6.0",
  :products => ["WhisperKit"]
### END WHISPERKIT PLUGIN SCRIPT ###

Update gitignore with:

ios/.spm.pods

Reference the example app in the repository.

Run npx pod-install after installing the npm package.

Android

Given that WhisperKit is built for Apple devices, this module does not work on Android.
