Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

with-server (1)

Command line utility to start/stop a local server in order to execute end-to-end tests once the server is ready.

How the server is started

The server is started by running an npm script from the project's package.json. By default the start script is used but you can specify another script using the --run <script> option.

Picking a port

The server is expected to listen on the local TCP port specified by the $PORT environment variable. If the var isn't set, with-server will pick a free random port and expose it as $PORT.

After starting the server with-server tries to connect to $PORT and waits until it becomes available.

Running the tests

Once the server is listening the given command is executed. Inside the tests $PORT or $SERVER_URL can be used to access the server.

When the test are finished the server is gracefully shut down and with-server will exit with the test command's exit code.

Redirecting the server output

By default the server's stdout is redirected to stderr so it doesn't get mixed up with the actual test output.

You can use the --redirect stdout option to write it to stdout instead or --redirect null to silence the output completely.

Usage

with-server [options] command

Options

  • --run The npm script to run (defaults to start)
  • --redirect Redirect the server's output to stdout, stderr or null (defaults to stderr)

Example

Lets say you have the following script in your package.json:

{
  "scripts": {
    "start": "react-scripts start",
    "test:e2e": "with-server cypress"
  }
}

Then npm run test:e2e will launch a server, expose its URL as $SERVER_URL and invoke cypress once the server is listening.

API

You can also use with-server programmatically:

const withServer = require("with-server");

const exitCode = await withServer("cypress", {
  run: "start",
  redirect: "stdout",
});
