Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

workspace-meta

A CLI tool for managing and synchronizing configuration across monorepo workspaces. Supports pnpm, yarn, and lerna workspaces with a flexible plugin architecture.

Installation

Install as a dev dependency at your workspace root:

pnpm add -Dw workspace-meta
# or
npm install -D workspace-meta
# or
yarn add -D workspace-meta

Quick Start

  1. Initialize workspace-meta in your monorepo:

    pnpm workspace-meta init

    Creates the .workspace-meta/ directory and initial configuration file.

  2. Check your workspace configuration:

    pnpm workspace-meta check

    Analyzes your workspace and shows what changes would be made without actually modifying files.

  3. Sync configuration across all packages:

    pnpm workspace-meta sync

    Applies all configured plugins to synchronize configuration across your workspace packages.

  4. Generate new packages with consistent setup:

    pnpm workspace-meta generate my-new-package

    Creates a new package with all your configured standards and templates applied.

Configuration

Configuration is stored in .workspace-meta/config.js or .workspace-meta/config.ts at your workspace root.

Basic Configuration

// .workspace-meta/config.js
import { defineWorkspaceMetaConfig, ensurePackageJson } from 'workspace-meta';

export default defineWorkspaceMetaConfig({
  plugins: [
    ensurePackageJson((pkg) => ({
      ...pkg,
      license: 'MIT',
      author: 'Your Name',
      repository: {
        type: 'git',
        url: 'https://github.com/yourorg/yourrepo.git',
      },
    })),
  ],
});

Configuration Options

  • plugins (required): Array of plugin functions to run on each package

Built-in Helpers

ensurePackageJson(updater)

Ensures package.json exists and updates it with the provided function.

ensurePackageJson((pkg) => ({
  ...pkg,
  license: 'MIT',
  scripts: {
    ...pkg.scripts,
    build: 'tsc',
    test: 'vitest',
  },
}));

ensureFile(path, content)

Ensures a file exists with the specified content.

// Static content
ensureFile('.gitignore', 'node_modules/\ndist/\n');

// Dynamic content based on context
ensureFile('README.md', (ctx) => `# ${ctx.packageName}\n\nDescription here.`);

conditionalFile(condition, path, content)

Conditionally creates a file based on a predicate.

conditionalFile(
  (ctx) => ctx.packageJson.scripts?.test,
  '.github/workflows/test.yml',
  testWorkflowContent,
);

updateJsonFile(path, updater)

Updates a JSON file with the provided updater function.

updateJsonFile('package.json', (pkg) => ({
  ...pkg,
  version: '1.0.0',
}));

ensureFileFromTemplate(filePath, templatePath)

Copies a template file from the config directory to packages.

// Copy from .workspace-meta/templates/
ensureFileFromTemplate('.eslintrc.json', 'templates/.eslintrc.json');
ensureFileFromTemplate('tsconfig.json', 'templates/tsconfig.json');

// Copy from relative paths
ensureFileFromTemplate('.prettierrc', '../shared/prettier-config.json');

prettierFormatter

A pre-configured formatter that uses Prettier to format files.

import { defineWorkspaceMetaConfig, prettierFormatter } from 'workspace-meta';

export default defineWorkspaceMetaConfig({
  formatter: prettierFormatter,
  plugins: [
    /* ... */
  ],
});

Custom Formatters

You can provide a custom formatter function to format generated files.

Built-in Prettier Formatter

workspace-meta includes a pre-made Prettier formatter that you can use:

import { defineWorkspaceMetaConfig, prettierFormatter } from 'workspace-meta';

export default defineWorkspaceMetaConfig({
  formatter: prettierFormatter,
  plugins: [
    /* ... */
  ],
});

The prettierFormatter will:

  • Automatically detect and use your existing Prettier configuration
  • Gracefully handle cases where Prettier is not installed
  • Format files according to their file extension
  • Fall back to original content if formatting fails

Custom Formatter

You can also create your own formatter function:

import prettier from 'prettier';

export default defineWorkspaceMetaConfig({
  plugins: [
    /* ... */
  ],
  formatter: async (content, filename) => {
    if (filename.endsWith('.json')) {
      return prettier.format(content, { parser: 'json' });
    }
    if (filename.endsWith('.js') || filename.endsWith('.ts')) {
      return prettier.format(content, { parser: 'typescript' });
    }
    return content;
  },
});

Plugin Context

Plugins receive a context object with useful information and utilities:

interface PluginContext {
  packageName: string; // Current package name
  packagePath: string; // Absolute path to package
  packageJson: PackageJson; // Current package.json content
  workspacePath: string; // Absolute path to workspace root
  configDirectory: string; // Path to .workspace-meta directory
  workspacePackages: PackageInfo[]; // All packages in the workspace
  isCheckMode: boolean; // Whether running in check mode
  readFile(path: string): Promise<string | undefined>;
  writeFile(path: string, content: string): Promise<void>;
}

Examples

Ensure TypeScript Configuration

export default defineWorkspaceMetaConfig({
  plugins: [
    ensureFile('tsconfig.json', {
      extends: '../../tsconfig.base.json',
      compilerOptions: {
        outDir: './dist',
        rootDir: './src',
      },
    }),
    ensurePackageJson((pkg) => ({
      ...pkg,
      main: './dist/index.js',
      types: './dist/index.d.ts',
      scripts: {
        ...pkg.scripts,
        build: 'tsc',
        dev: 'tsc --watch',
      },
    })),
  ],
});

Ensure Consistent Linting

export default defineWorkspaceMetaConfig({
  plugins: [
    ensureFileFromTemplate('.eslintrc.json', 'templates/eslintrc.json'),
    ensurePackageJson((pkg) => ({
      ...pkg,
      scripts: {
        ...pkg.scripts,
        lint: 'eslint src',
        'lint:fix': 'eslint src --fix',
      },
    })),
  ],
});

Using Templates for Configuration

import {
  defineWorkspaceMetaConfig,
  ensureFileFromTemplate,
  prettierFormatter,
} from 'workspace-meta';

export default defineWorkspaceMetaConfig({
  formatter: prettierFormatter,
  plugins: [
    // Copy configuration templates from .workspace-meta/templates/
    ensureFileFromTemplate('.eslintrc.json', 'templates/eslintrc.json'),
    ensureFileFromTemplate('tsconfig.json', 'templates/tsconfig.json'),
    ensureFileFromTemplate('.prettierrc', 'templates/prettierrc.json'),

    // Ensure all packages have consistent scripts
    ensurePackageJson((pkg) => ({
      ...pkg,
      scripts: {
        ...pkg.scripts,
        lint: 'eslint .',
        format: 'prettier --write .',
        typecheck: 'tsc --noEmit',
      },
    })),
  ],
});

Including Root Package

To run plugins on the root package as well as workspace packages:

export default defineWorkspaceMetaConfig({
  includeRootPackage: true,
  plugins: [
    // This will run on both the root package and all workspace packages
    ensurePackageJson((pkg) => ({
      ...pkg,
      engines: {
        node: '>=18',
        pnpm: '>=8',
      },
    })),
  ],
});

With this setup, create your templates in .workspace-meta/templates/:

.workspace-meta/
├── config.js
└── templates/
    ├── eslintrc.json
    ├── tsconfig.json
    └── prettierrc.json
