Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

📦 Installation

Global Installation (Recommended)

npm install -g wp-react-starter-theme

Create a New Theme

# Basic usage
wp-react-starter my-professional-theme

# Overwrite existing theme
wp-react-starter my-professional-theme --force

# Install directly to WordPress themes directory
wp-react-starter my-professional-theme --wp-themes=/path/to/wp-content/themes

# Combine options
wp-react-starter my-professional-theme --wp-themes=/path/to/wp-content/themes --force

Or if you prefer npx:

npx wp-react-starter-theme my-professional-theme

🛠️ Development

Option 1: Standard Installation

After creating your theme, navigate to the theme directory and install dependencies:

cd my-professional-theme
npm install
npm run build

Option 2: Direct WordPress Installation

Install directly to your WordPress themes directory to avoid manual uploads:

# Install to WordPress themes directory
wp-react-starter my-professional-theme --wp-themes=/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/wordpress-test/wp-content/themes

# Navigate to theme directory
cd /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/wordpress-test/wp-content/themes/my-professional-theme

# Install dependencies and start development
npm install
npm run dev

Available Scripts

🎨 Customization

WordPress Admin Customization

  1. Menus: Go to Appearance → Menus to create and manage navigation menus
  2. Widgets: Go to Appearance → Widgets to add content to sidebar and footer areas
  3. Customizer: Go to Appearance → Customize to modify theme settings
  4. Logo: Upload your logo through Appearance → Customize → Site Identity

React Component Customization

The theme uses CSS variables for easy customization. Edit src/styles/main.css to change colors, fonts, and other design tokens:

Adding New Pages

  1. Create a new component in src/pages/
  2. Add the route in src/App.js
  3. The navigation will automatically update when you add menu items in WordPress admin

Create reusable components in src/components/ and import them where needed.
