Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

zod-versioner

Type-safe data versioning library using Zod schemas

Features

  • Elegant, type-safe data migration between versions
  • Data structure validation using Zod
  • Support for sequential migrations
  • Safe upgrade to latest or specific version

Quick start

Install:

npm install zod-versioner
# or
yarn add zod-versioner
# or
pnpm add zod-versioner

Usage:

import { Versioner } from "zod-versioner"
import z from "zod"

// Define schemas for different versions
const SchemaV1 = z.object({
	v: z.literal(1),
	title: z.string(),
})

const SchemaV2 = SchemaV1.extend({
	v: z.literal(2),
	content: z.string(),
})

// Create versioner and register schemas
const versioner = Versioner()
	.version(SchemaV1)
	.version(SchemaV2, (data) => {
        // typescript infers data type = SchemaV1
        // typescript infers return type = SchemaV2
		return {
			...data,
			content: "default content",
		}
	})

// typescript infers type equal to the last registered schema in versioner instance
const LatestSchema = versioner.latestSchema()

const result = versioner.safeUpgradeToLatest({
	v: 1,
	title: "Hello",
})
// => { success: true, data: { v: 2, title: 'Hello', content: 'default content' } }

API

Versioner()

Creates a new versioner instance.

.latestSchema()

Returns the typed schema of the latest registered version.

.latestVersion()

Returns the literal number of the latest registered version.

.version(schema, migrationFn)

Registers a new version schema:

  • schema: Zod object schema with required field v: z.ZodLiteral<number>
  • migrationFn: Migration function with fully inferred parameter and return types

.safeUpgradeToLatest(data)

Safely upgrades data to the latest version. Returns ZodSafeParseResult

.safeUpgradeTo(data, version)

Safely upgrades data to the specified version. Returns ZodSafeParseResult

Typescript only allows versions that are registered in versioner instance

.isLatest(data)

Checks if data matches the latest version schema.

.hasLatestStructure(data)

Checks if data structure matches the latest version schema (ignoring actual version value and extra fields).

Error Handling

import { isInvalidVersionType, isUnsupportedVersion } from "./versioner"

const result = versioner.safeUpgradeToLatest(data)
if (!result.success) {
	if (isUnsupportedVersion(result.error)) {
		// Valid version type but not registered in Versioner instance
	}
	if (isInvalidVersionType(result.error)) {
		// Invalid version type
	}
}
